....the music was just as it should be but David Lee Roth....I don't even know what to say.

Eddie was in good form but DLR is next level horrible. He looked like a hospice patient. Loved the gum chewing and bandaid on his nose.

Also, Wolfie should consider the occasional salad.

FYI-DLR was doing his thing before the show to warm up the crowd. Was twirling his mic stand and knocked himself in the nose. Got bandaged up and finished the show. Went to hospital after show and got 14 stitches. Might be the reason he was a little "off."

However the music was awesome. EVH can make that guitar sound like pure joy. I feel sorry for kids today with the crappy "music" that they have to put up with.

They just need some practice, they seemed off.

DLR looks like a train wreck that will never last the summer. I hope they have some ready to replace him on short notice.

Eddie looked fairly good, or at least I thought he did.

Already have a Pool going on which show will be the last of the tour before the rest of tour is cancelled for "exhaustion" which the previous two reunions with DLR have been...exhaustion is The VH code word for some combination of bad ticket sales...The Van Halens and DLR can't stand each other and Eddie is drinking again and has to go back to rehab

I've looked at some video from their last tour. Unless he hits himself in the nose with a mic stand before every performance....

He just sounds awful. He's like a caricature of his former self.

Yeah. Not an impressive performance by DLR.
I couldn't make it through the first verse. (thanks for the link). He was behind the whole time. He was also mixed a little too low volume wise.. maybe that was on purpose. Just benefit of the doubt, wonder if his monitor was working correctly

eddie sounded like album quality.

Dave has never sounded good live. He is a frontman with great stage presence and bravado. A singer he is not. And he forgets lyrics all the time. He tries to cover it up with his schtick. There is a video of them playing last year where in the middle of the song Dave starts singing lyrics to a different song. Wolfie walks over to him and whispers in his ear that he is singing the wrong song. Kind of funny.
Eddie is looking good and playing good. Glad to see it. And Alex still has it.

Is that Jimmy Kimmel's twin in the bottom left of the frame for the first 20 seconds?

DLR sounded pretty bad. I'm guessing Sammy Hagar would be a better choice these days.

I saw them at the Lakeland Civic Center in the summer of '79. Best. show. ever.

Correction: August, 1981. Fair Warning tour.

Eh, they've had 30 years and still haven't, so I doubt it.

very few of these bands from 30 years ago are worth seeing.

saw the police a few years ago, another band where they all hate each other. they sucked too. sting looks a little better than DLR, but their timing was crap, etc. and they were just going through the motions.

Yep...saw em on the same tour....their disdain for one another was palpable and the show was awful

My brother bought tickets for me for my birthday in March of 2012, as I would not pay the $125 (x2 because I would have brought my son) for something that I had no idea would turn out.

The set list was pretty decent and DLR actually sounded pretty good. Eddie was good, as was Alex. Eddie's solo consisted of past solos that appeared on Van Halen albums. Wolfgang played pretty good, but it just didn't seem right with Michael Anthony not up there, and VH really did miss, perhaps, one of the all time greatest backup vocalists.

I was 14 when 1984 was released and I did not see the 1984 tour and for years, I thought that I would never be able to see VH with DLR. When VH resurfaced in 1986 with Hagar, and DLR was solo, I saw both of their tours in 1986, and both shows were great.

If I was asked after the show if the show was worth $125, I think that growing up a huge Van Halen fan, and perhaps that this might be the only chance that I would get to see VH with DLR and the fact that the set list was solid, I would say for that one time, it was worth the $125.

I agree with some other posters that DLR has never sounded great live, but when I saw them in 2012, I was pleasantly surprised that he sounded pretty decent, and throw in all the usual DLR stage mannerisms (my son was 13 and had never really seen DLR perform, just the few Youtube shots that I showed him, my son actually asked me if DLR was gay
laugh.r191677.gif
because of his mannerisms and his shtick).

After hearing DLR on Jimmy Kimmel, I would not pay anything to go see them live. I guess it's kind of like watching The Who perform at the Super Bowl, they were once the best in the business when performing live, but time as not been kind to them and the younger generations will remember them for these poor live performances.

Was at the same show....it rocked!

I was channel surfing yesterday and the were on Ellen. WTH? VH on Ellen? So I watched.....David Lee Roth came off as acting very gay (NTTIAWWT). Literally, his moves looked like Dieter from Sprockets from SNL......bizarre!

I didn't think they sounded bad...probably was lip synced......all I took from it was that David Lee Roth was feminine as hell.

I saw it online. It wasn't lip synced. I don't think there any way Roth could lip sync his craziness since he makes it up as he goes. But I also wondered why they were on Ellen. I can see VH on a night show like Kimmel. But a daytime talk show?

The Ellen show was not lip synced. He is acting weird. Alex actually sounds a bit off as well. However, just a month ago, Eddie was saying he had no idea where DLR even was. So, they probably did these with very little rehearsal. The concert vid from the Tokyo Dome is definitely better, but DLR needs to spit out his gum!

I remember reading an interview with a singer (don't remember who and it wasn't Roth) that they keep gum in their mouth while singing so their mouth doesn't dry out. If that's true, I wonder if Roth is doing the same.

It's too bad his voice hasn't stood the test of time like the rest of him (minus the hair). He looks fit and frisky for a man nearing 60. His voice was never great, but he can barely sing a note at this point. His Diamond Dave persona has overtaken his rock star charisma that helped make VH such legends in the first place.

Well, in his defense, a guitarist friend told me that Eddie doesn't down tune any more like in the old days, when in fact he should be in consideration of DLR's voice.

I was going to thank the poster who provided the link, but then I watched the performance....

I saw VH on the 1984 tour and thought DLR nearly ruined the show - he jumps around like an ass. I do think he had a pretty good voice for VH's style of music, but live he has never really sounded good to me. I saw the band several times with Hagar and thought they were immensely better - in the studio also, so I would guess I am in the minority as a VH fan as most like them with DLR.

I loved VH with Hagar, and they put on some great concerts. My first concert was VH on the 5150 tour, with Bachman, Turner, Overdrive opening.

I loved VH with Roth and really wished I had seen them all together back in the day. Roth's first solo tout with Billy Sheehan, Gregg Bissonette and Steve Vai was great, but of course it was all about DLR. His band he put together was great at the time. Roth sang a handful of VH tunes and one would think that VH was behind him, supporting him. Yankee Rose is still one of my all time favorite songs.

I think GNR was supposed to be the opening band, but got kicked off the tour a few weeks before we saw them and Cinderella ended up opening, and they put on a great show.

awesome thanks guys

Man your story was like looking in the mirror. Grew up a huge VH fan. Never saw them with Dave. Was a little young when he was still with the band. Was 14 in 1984 as well. Saw them many times with Sammy including 1986 and Dave live the same yr. I think poison opened up for him. Great show. Dave rode over the crowd on a surfboard. but kinda gave up hope that I'd ever see them with Dave or hear their classic tunes live. But finally saw them in 2012. Really enjoyed the concert even if Dave didn't sound great. Just felt like I was stepping back in time to fulfill a musical bucket list item and those tunes brought back a bunch of good memories from my teens. I'd go see em again if they came my way. Just hearing Eddie live is worth the price of admission.
