Bobby Bowden coached the first game of his first 11-win season and first undefeated regular season at FSU, beating Southern Miss 17-14. It was his only 11-win season before the first year of the dynasty run in 1987.
Bobby employed a two QB system with Wally Woodham playing the 1st & 3rd quarters and Jimmy Jordan playing the 2nd & 4th quarters.

FSU rallied from behind to score 14 points in the final 10 minutes of play to beat Southern Miss in the season opener.
This year the Noles had 9 All-American's including Ron Simmons who made 1st Team AA with 8 different organizations.
FSU went on that year to beat the hurricanes, gators and 3 SEC teams climbing into the top 5 in the country before falling to Heisman winner Billy Sims of Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl 24-7 (helped by turnovers).
