It's pretty funny. But also sad. It's why we have so much regulation in the first place. People being afraid to take care of themselves and making big scary decisions.

I am no generally a "Americas reign is nearing an end" kind of person, but when I see people go "I can't pump my own gas" I begin to wonder how long we, as a country, have.

We still have plenty of pull yourself up by the bootstraps people but what % of the population is useless before we topple over.

But I agree, sad but funny. Or is it funny but sad?

It’s probably just those 3 numpties that they happened to interview.

I refuse to believe adults could be that inept and indignant over pumping gas.

I didn't think it was that bad until my neighborhood got the "Nextdoor" app. It's like social media for your neighborhood. HO LEE CHIT. I live in an upper middle class beachside community and I don't understand how 2/3 of these people function as human beings without adult supervision. It's sad really.

I applaud your belief and confidence.. But I think you are wrong. :) I think we have a LOT of numpties. <gonna have to look that up>

edit - Looked it up. Definitely think you are giving too much credit.

Seems the top 4 issues are:

1. Going to work smelling like gasoline
2. Getting out of the car near transients
3. Takes jobs away from attendants
4. Not trained to pump gas

So what do these people do if they don't learn basic life skills? What do they do on a road trip?

There is no question in my mind that this country's best days are behind it.

Honestly, driving is one of the easiest things you could ever do, however 99.9 % of the people here in SW FL have no clue how to drive

I can assure you, it's not just SW FL. Plenty of transplants from many other states here in Northern DFW that strive to amaze with new lows of ineptitude daily. The "California swerve four lanes to turn a different direction" is definitely one of my favorites. As well as the "Kentucky slow to a crawl to read a street sign in clear daylight."

It's not that Texans can't drive, it's that we don't have patience for the folks that don't know how to function as adults while behind the wheel.

Was out in Oregon last summer. Got out started to pump my own gas and got scolded by the attendant. I was seriously, I don't need help, I could do it myself. He said, no you are not allowed. Got horrified looks from people around me. Was like I was in some strange alternative world.

So true, Fly. When our very large neighborhood got Nextdoor, the entertainment value of these numbnuts cannot be exaggerated. Real popcorn stuff, I'm telling you.

I have a friend that lives in the Medford Oregon area and he has posted on Facebook that people are genuinely scared of what will happen when they need to get gas now. A lot of people out there apparently think it is rocket science to pump gas.

I grew up in NJ before moving to GA, and now when I return home I try to find an out of the way pump so I can pump my own gas. Otherwise I typically have to sit & wait in line because the attendants are too lazy to open up more than 1 pump and deal with more than 1 customer at a time.

That figures.

I can't think of a single positive thing about New Jersey. At least Oregon is pretty.

Ever been to south Jersey along the Shore (not including the dump that is Atlantic City)? It is a whole different world than near NYC and Philly. I grew up on the Jersey Shore and while I don't want to live there again, it does sadden me to constantly hear that area lumped in with the 2 major metro areas of the state.

We went there 3? years ago, when we visited I had to fill up several times. I thought it was optional and got the same dirty looks. It was a very weird feeling to have some other guy pump my gas while I just sat in the car.

Its like touching another guy's grill. Look, don't flip my meat and don't pump my gas. It just doesn't feel right to me.

As soon as the "smell like gas" comment popped up, apparently a lot of people had zoolander flashbacks.

Do any of these people mow their own lawns? Or something else that requires them to have a gas can? How do they fill that?

My brother, who lives in Portland, uses a push reel mower, which is what we learned on as kids.

I was not aware that there was even gas attendants around anymore.
I remember seeing a self serve station open on Pensacola Street at the Ocala Street intersection and was amazed. First I ever saw and the guy inside selling smokes and beer told me that soon enuff there would be no more attendants. It blew my mind, but sure enuff, it happened relatively fast.

I'm removing Oregon as a potential state to relocate to.
Nice place to visit though. Was there with the motorhome this past summer. Had to show the homeless guy..er..gas station attendant where the gas cap was. Least I didn't have to do it in 2 transactions (most self serve pumps quit at $100).
