Since this came up on another thread where I did a little research I decided to take the time to find out if we really play fewer ranked teams at home now than we did in the past. Here's what I found.
Between 1980 and 1991 we averaged playing 3.83 ranked teams per regular season. We played 1.25 games per season during that span against ranked opponents at home.
This was one reason we wanted to join a conference--to improve our scheduling. For awhile, it certainly worked. Between 1992 when we first joined the conference and 2000 we averaged playing 4.66 ranked teams per regular season. We played 2.22 ranked teams at home during that span.
League expansion and Miami's downturn would hurt our numbers over the remainder of Bobby's tenure. From 2001 until 2010 we averaged playing 3 ranked teams per regular season. We played 1.55 ranked teams at home during that time period.
Jimbo took over in 2010 and was left with a two game home and away series with Oklahoma who was ranked for both years. Over his first seven years we have averaged playing 2.57 ranked teams per regular season. We have played 1.28 of those games at home.
Note that conference title games and bowl games are not included in the number of ranked opponents played.
So what you have is 1.25 ranked opponents on the home schedule between 1980-1991, 2.22 ranked opponents on the home schedule between 1992-2000, 1.55 ranked opponents on the home schedule between 2001-2010, and 1.28 ranked teams at Doak during Jimbo's tenure.
