I often hear fans talk about team sports resembling a chess match--
you devise a game plan, put those pieces (players) into a position to execute on the plan, counter attack as needed and then capture the king (win the game) based on the plan or slight deviation from.

Which team sport most resembles this?

Football and soccer by far in my opinion. I've coached both types of teams at the junior high and high school levels that weren't nearly as talented or athletic as other teams in our divisions/conference/district... but we were able to win league/division/district championships due to game plans and tactics - with the players executing those strategies to perfection.

Soccer seems the one to most closely match it. Take the Orlando City vs Vancouver game that I'm still angry about from Saturday night. Vancouver knew they couldn't win if they came in playing a game actively trying to score, so they parked the bus and hoped to get lucky on a quick counter when Orlando got out of position (Which we do from time to time) or off of a set piece. In addition, they chose to play as rough and over the line as they could which resulted in 4 yellows (One should have been a red) and also delaying as much as possible towards the end of the game.

In the end, they got lucky that they received a free kick with 40 seconds left which they were able to convert a header off of and wound up winning 1 - 0. I hated the way they chose to play, but they played their strategy to perfection where they were simply hoping for a draw and came out with a lucky win.

Soccer or rugby. Having played both, as well as chess, the similarities as far as the strategy goes are most similar between those two sports and chess.

You put Tag Team Wrestling as an option. While Tag Team Wrestling doesn't resemble anything but Jerry Springer in ring, real Wrestling does very much have strategies you would see in chess.

There is a lot of baiting that goes on throughout a match that has to begin many moves ahead of time in order to hit on the actual move you are trying to set up. There is also A LOT of counter to a counter to counter that is constantly taking place throughout a match.

That would be my closest sport to say is similar.

Baseball was my first thought. Mainly toward the end of the game when you're trying to get the right pitching and hitting match-ups. More so in the National League since the pitchers actually bat.

Interesting about baseball. I thought of it on the lesser side compared to the other sports. If I had to rank them:

Soccer
Football
Bball
Baseball
Hockey

I get the R/L matchups for baseball but the other strategy elements to baseball would be small ball approach, Outfield/ Infield shifts, taking the first pitch

(for those nole baseball fans that know about the constant arguing whether or not this is a true strategy from 11 or not...)

Why would hockey be any different from soccer? It's the same game essentially
