Florida State (23-7, 13-5 ACC) will play in an ACC Tournament quarterfinal game on Friday at 11 a.m. against North Carolina (26-6, 13-5) in Greensboro, N.C. The game will air on ESPN2.
Earlier this season, FSU shocked then 13th-ranked North Carolina with a 86-84 victory on the road. Fifth-seeded North Carolina defeated No. 12 Boston College, 78-71 on Thursday in the second round.
FSU earned an automatic path to the quarterfinal, a double-bye, as the No. 4 seed in the ACC.
"That was one of the things that our players were most excited about," FSU coach Brooke Wyckoff said. "Obviously, they were proud of the 4 seed. But to know that there is an extra day there to rest and recovery. They have given everything. That was a really fun reward."
FSU entered the postseason leading in scoring at 88.2 points per game, led by Ta’Niya Latson — the nation’s leading scorer at 25.4 points per game. Three-time All-Defensive Team selection and Katrina McClain Top 5 Finalist Makayla Timpson leads the defense, ranking fourth in the nation with 91 blocks this season.
Wyckoff said she thinks a run in the ACC tournament can help the Seminoles, although she doesn't think FSU is in position to host a regional unless it wins the league tournament.
"Going into the ACC tournament, honestly I think it can only help us," Wyckoff said. "If we have some success this week it could potentially help us. But I feel really, really good about the body of work that we have put together in this regular season. Hopefully it will get us a fair seed and put us in a good position to make a little run in the (NCAA) Tournament. And hopefully improve from years past with a higher seed."
