As they do for most major holidays, Publix has their standing rib roast on sale. $6.99 this week. Their GreenWise Angus roast is on sale too for $2 more. Anyone ever had the GreenWise beef? Is there a noticeable difference? Usually, we get two. One I cook as a prime rib and the other we get cut up into steaks. Curious.

The Greenwise beef is amazing and worth the extra $$ if you have it (and I know you do as an LRer). You better call ahead though and make sure they have some ready for you.

I’ve never had the GreenWise roast so I can’t comment on that, but I grilled some GreenWise ribeyes literally yesterday doing a mix of African spicy garlic dry rub (by Spice Hunter), garlic powder, onion powder, Publix chili powder, a little Korean BBQ dry rub also by Spice Hunter on one side, turmeric, black pepper and Himalayan pink salt. It turned out great!

There was definitely more marbling than their standard steaks but well below what you get at Fresh Market. And you could definitely tell the fact they were grassfed instead of corn fed as it was far more gamier and “beefier” than the bland corn fed meat in regular Publix bins. I liked it but if you’re used to mainly eating corn fed beef I can see others not liking it.

I stock up during these times. I get the Greenwise, and get them cut 2" thick and vacuum pack them with 1/2 a stick of butter, salt and pepper. Drop them bad boys in the Sous Vide and you are GTG.

I tried the Greenwise NY Strip once. I noticed no difference from the regular ones. When I want a step up in quality, I go out of my way to Fresh Market, whose steaks are noticeably better.

Huh, different in my Publix as far as marbling. The Greenwise ribeyes and strip steaks always have visibly less marbling in our Publix, as I thought most grassfed steaks do. I usually opt for the standard when I'm getting those. When I get a sirloin, that doesn't have that much marbling anyway, I'll go Greenwise when the price is right. Greenwise ground beef is a go as well. It's good beef for sure, I just normally can't get over going for the more marbling in the regular steaks.

We by the green wise for some stuff and get grass feed organic beef (hamburger) Never had a complaint. We try and buy organic no chemicals whenever possible.

The green wise ground chuck is superior to the regular Publix ground chuck I've noticed, at least when making burgers.

Oh there’s no doubt that with two identical cows where one is corn fed and one is grass that the corn fed will have more fat/marbling. But they’re not using identical cows at Publix. The Greenwise is exclusively black and red Angus which is a far fattier breed of cow (not so much as the wagyu though) while their regular steaks come from the “lesser” breeds like Hereford, Lim/Flex, other Limousin hybrids, Gebvieh, Brahman, Simmental etc... All beef cattle breeds but most with lower marbling on average than Angus. Plus, I’m kind of thinking that they’re using the “used” three year old Jerseys under their regular steaks because every time I look at regular Publix steaks they a lot like the discount Jersey steaks Fresh Market sometimes carries in addition to their better breeds.

Maybe so. At my Publix, I have never seen that. That said, the Publix locations around me don't carry a big selection of Greenwise steaks, usually one or two of a given cut to choose from. I notice it, because sometimes the Greenwise are on sale cheaper than the standard, and they still don't have a selection. So either they don't move around here so they're not getting a good shipment, or people are snatching up a good one right away when they see it.

In reality there's only one Publix (and no Krogers) around me that reliably have a good selection of steaks and is pretty much my go to. I can find something there about 90% of the time, and even they rarely have much of a selection of Greenwise even when they have plenty of everything the regular to choose from. Most other stores are about 10-25% likely to have something that looks decent. Used to be if I struck out at my steak Kroger, I'd head to Fresh Market or Whole Foods, but since I got the Costco membership, I haven't bought a steak anywhere other than my steak Publix or Costco. I'll keep my Costco membership for that reason alone.

But I get Greenwise ground beef for burgers and tacos, or a similar fancy pants grass fed/organic.
