Question about buying an iPhone with no contract

I do not have a contract with AT&T, just month-to-month for the cell phone service. If I purchase a newer iPhone (I've been using the one I have for years), am I able to stay month-to-month or have they done away with those ? I haven't been inside an AT&T store in quite a while. If it is possible, where is the best place to buy an older (i.e. iPhone 5) phone ?

I'm not with AT&T, but I've been off contract with Verizon for years. If you buy a newer phone, it is my understanding that you would switch out the sim card from your old phone into whichever new phone you choose to get. For an older iPhone, I'd recommend eBay or craigslist.
