Some people will probably think I am crazy, but here goes.

My wife and I booked a trip to Italy almost a year ago. Fly to Rome on July 31st, spend a little time there then take a Cruise for a week and end up in Naples and then fly home to Jacksonville.

The trip is in early August and of course neither the flight or Cruise has been cancelled yet. The flights aren't a problem, I have status with Delta and they have already allowed for a cancellation with a full travel credit. The issue lies with the Cruise Line (Celebrity) as they expect payment in full by May 4th. My current thought is to just forfeit my deposit and cut my losses ($500).

Allegedly if I pay in full and the trip gets cancelled either by me or the Cruise Line, I get a future Cruise Credit. Do I even want a future Cruise Credit?

I would be curious if anyone has some insight or opinions.

Thank you and Go Noles!

Haven’t the cruise lines suspended travel beyond your departure date?

Only my opinion, but you couldn't get me on a ship till there's a C19 vaccine and ample testing... seems like people that end up on a quarantined ship have had it pretty bad.

Will they still be shut down, or at least severely confining movement by then? If you're treating yourself to a once in a lifetime trip, hold off. You're gonna want to experience Italy in the least restrained way possible and I doubt they're gonna have people standing shoulder to shoulder looking up at the Sistine Chapel ceiling three months from now even if things get much better. Good luck with your decision, just wanted to convey that the full experience is worth waiting for if you think your available activities are gonna be constrained.

We had a Celebrity trip for Alaska scheduled for June 5th. As expected, since our cruise was to leave from Seattle, Celebrity canceled all Alaska cruises at least through July 1st. Since they canceled, we had the immediate option to defer our total payments (our final payment was due before the worst of this hit) to a future cruise before 12/31/2021 but at 125% of what we had paid. Option two was get all of our money back. Due to the uncertainty of cruising in general..we asked for our money back on March 24th. Oh....we’re still waiting for our money back, it’s an uneasy feeling to say the least. With Royal Caribbean/Celebrity, they have instituted a cruise with confidence plan, letting you cancel up to 48 hours before your departure date, but there is no option to get your money back, only a future cruise credit. If you wait and they cancel, you can get all of your money back. If you don’t pay the final payment I have no idea how that would impact your deal. That discussion would be best taken up with Celebrity. I check my credit card daily looking for my five grand....it’s really unfair it’s taking so long since we had to pay in full three months prior to travel. I hope that helps.

I would have to agree with those saying bag any sort of trip for this year of that nature. No way it will all be back to normal by then...sure don’t want a trip of a lifetime to be done under the current conditions.

(I’d also try to get your $ back...then use it maybe next year when I imagine things will be much better and cruise lines etc will be giving good deals trying to get business back)

Well, "as luck" would have it, I was laid off of my job today, so I most definitely will not be heading to Europe in the near future. Everything is cancelled as of this morning. I have to save money to pay for my Season Tickets and Booster Fees!

Best of luck, & I hope you land on your feet soon bro. Are they possibly bringing you back on after all this craziness subsides?

I was told "possible reinstatement", but I just don't see it happening. They let 43 people yesterday (April 22nd) go out of a total employee pool of 350 people and the remaining folks took between 10-30% pay cuts depending on their title.

This was a company that 18 months had a market cap of $2.5 billion and is now at around $300 million. Biggest recent issue is inability to be able to provide product for elective surgeries. Drove down Sales number by about 60%.

As I turn 60 this year, I am concerned about what the future holds, but I am going to plug away until I secure something that is rewarding and hopefully makes a difference.

This is what I thought too. I expect very large discounts on getting anyone back on the boats in the near future. Plus I wouldn't trust a credit on a company that may not be in business in the future.

Interesting thought came to mind about getting back to normal. Normal is accepting that there has always been and will always be germs out there that make us very sick and potentially kill us. Normal is breaking the bonds of fear when we journey from minimizing to accepting the risks that come along with daily living. Let us all pray for courage. It is in great need at this time.
