What do you do to pass the time on longer flights? I have a long flight coming up, haven't flown in a while (like not since some planes got WiFi) and was wondering what people do. Do you download movied before getting on the plan and watch them while traveling, podcasts, etc. Looking for some ideas to pass the time

How long a flight? Do you know if WiFi is available?

Regardless, you really can't go wrong with a tablet (e.g., IPad, Kindle). A couple of books, some music, and a movie or two/some television shows...what else do you need? If WiFi is available, you can surf a bit too.

The only catch might be the length of your flight, and whether or not you have enough juice (e.g., might be tough to get 8 hours of movies on one charge). However, there are any number of battery backups available these days.

Finally, as someone who travels a lot, frequentlylong hauls, I would like to implore you to please a.) bathe before you head to the airport, and b.) don't eat chili or anything else that will upset your delicate GI system before heading out. People are f'ing gross.

(not really kidding though)

Keep in mind that international flights don't ave WiFi yet over the entire span of the flight.

I can usually get by a couple hours with either the in flight entertainment or mindless games on my phone. When I took a 15 hour flight a few months ago, I downloaded a bunch of movies that were culturally relevant that I hadn't seen before.

A 15 hour flight is way different than a 2 hour flight, so be more specific....also, what airline.

If you're flying internationally they almost always have a ton of free movies, many of which I haven't seen.

Are you certain that this is true? I could have sworn that I had WiFi for the entire Copenhagen to EWR flight on SAS a few years ago. Maybe it was the route (e.g., we were over Greenland and Iceland for part of the route, rather than most of the trip being over the Atlantic)?

Sleep...

Since everyone in the Locker room flies 1st class, you just drink the whole 15 hours. If you do it right it's just like time traveling. You wake up and you're home. Problem solved!

I read National Geographic, but only when I'm on a plane. Can't explain it... it just doesn't interest me at home.

I also eat a volatile meal either at the airport or on the way to the airport. Like a bunch of Krystal chilli pups or something.

I find it really ups the ante, and the possibility of pooping your pants mid-flight adds a nice air of unpredictability to the trip. It's a must before flights or long car rides. My friends and I call it "having our volatile."

I used to fly a lot (over 100K miles/yr). I would read books (real paperback ones). I like Clive Cussler (Dirk Pitt series) as they were fun and easy to read.

I would grab paperbacks at garage sales or Goodwill and then read them, when finished, walk down the isle, hold it up and give them away.

If a movie was playing, I would watch sometimes. Bring your own headphones though as the $3 ones they sell are worth < $1.

I usually bring a magazine and read or sleep. Domestic airlines are too cramped to get any work done.

This probably sounds dumb, but I really enjoy just looking out of the window. Ever since I was a little kid. I get sort of lost in it. When I get bored with that I usually consume booze.

I've got a Sony PSP that I take on long flights - that way I can play Madden, Tiger Woods, Call of Duty, etc during the flight. They don't make the games any more, so the ones I play are a few years old, but it does the job for what I need to keep me occiupied for a while. Even with the PSP, watching the in-flight movies, drinking, and magazines, the 14 hour India flight is still a loooong time to be on a plane. That and the flight to Australia (about the same length) were the two longest I've been on.

-Tell the attendant you are a virgin, then ask if they ever had a virgin before...or lately.
-Try to make it to the restroom without touching the aisle...tell people that's where the alligators are.
-Take food/drink from your seatmates without asking.
-Make paper airplanes from the flight magazine, and then throw them around the plane.
-When the attendant asks if you want a drink, say very loudly, "What do mean the pilot has been off his meds for days????"
-Chant Latin.

I catch up on magazine or book reading. If I get the first upgrade, I linger over the meal for about an hour savoring every bite and of course drinks are on the house. Ipod comes in handy too especially if someone near you is jabbering. Someone said looking out the window, you can see some amazing atmospheric skyscapes up there.

OP-
What have you been meaning to focus on but "haven't found the time"?

Financial planning for your family? Writing a letter/email to relative with whom you've lost touch? If wifi, researching something to make your life easier? Thinking about your career and its direction?

You get my drift. This is quiet time that's so rare. Make the most of it. It can seem average, but it's what you make of it.... and you can make it the most valuable few hours you've had in a long time.
