This weekend, I ended up at the Publix where my family used to shop when I was a kid in the 80s. Hadn't been in there in a while and it's been remodeled. While I was in the line, I remembered that the front of it had a restaurant that I even recalled eating at maybe once or twice. I'm fairly certain that I remember it having waitresses in Publix uniforms with name tags, etc.

I told some family friends about it later in the day who are my age but grew up in south Florida. They've always used Publix they said but never had seen one with a restaurant. Is something that was unique to our store? I can't imagine that they wouldn't have had them in others but not one other person in the group I was in remembered a restaurant.

Never saw a restaurant in Publix, then again I grew up in Sumter County, but when I moved to Tampa they weren't there and I've yet to see one in Panama

I used to see some with a sitting area where people could take food from the deli, but never a restaurant. The girls or women you saw were cashiers on break eating lunch...

I was in your hood today looking at a house to rent. It's located in the complete opposite corner from your house. We should be neighbors around 4/20. I also saw the news about the golf course reopening in the fall. We will have to grab a sixer of Hoogarden and sit in the garage people watching.

Yeah...we had this. You entrance was the deli area, you would then order, and then sit and eat your meal...similar to a subway I guess. But never a full blown restaurant.

I don’t recall ever seeing one in a Publix. A Kmart near me had a lunch counter in it when I was younger, had sandwiches, burgers, grilled cheese, etc.

That's great news. I'm always down for too many Hoogardens!

Never seen one but I am sure at some point they will make a sitting area or something. Lots of people come in there for lunch (Pub sub) and then eat in their car. Went into a Kroger recently for the first time in a very long time. They had 3 Veterans parking spots up front. Not a bad marketing concept; just not sure how much use they are getting in HHI.

The Publix on Thomasville Rd., just outside of Kilearn has a sit down area, but it isn't a full blown restaurant. Publix used to own Crispers, but those were stand alone stores.

Never remember a restaurant in Publix. I grew up in the Winter Park / Orlando area in the 70's & 80's.

I definitely remember Woolworths having one. My Mom would take me to the Winter Park Mall and we'd eat there. I even remember the K-Marts had a lunch counter where you could get food.

Don't want to hijack the thread. But any Central Florida folks remember the Winter Park Mall?

Woolworths, Kmart, Zayre’s and Ames all had lunch counters.

Which location do you remember having a restaurant? In Tallahassee?

Yes. They tore it down in the late 90s/early 2000s and redeveloped it as a walkable lifestyle center with a movie theater.

They have Starbucks in several stores...they do serve food...would that qualify as a "restaurant"?

The one out in Killearn had the deli setup with a "restaurant" style similar to what you'd experience at Subway, etc... You'd go through the line, order your sandwich, drinks, chips, etc... pay there and then go to the sitting area to eat. So while not technically a restaurant, it's close enough to confirm your memory.

Ocala Corners (near campus) has the same set-up.

I don’t. But I swear I can remember the Belks in the Northwoods Mall way back when having one upstairs.

If I have soup, is it a meal?

The first Publix my wife worked at in Valdosta had the same setup in the early 90's.

The one in West Palm off of Southern Blvd east of 95 has a Cuban Coffee counter and pastries (That area has a large Hispanic population). I fairly certain it still does but I usually go to the Tulipan Bakery around the corner for all my Cuban coffee needs.

Yes, I know. It's definitely a vast improvement. I grew up in Winter Park so there is definitely lots of Nostalgia for the old Winter Park Mall. Heck that entire area between the Winter Park Mall and the train tracks near Park Ave used to be a high crime area. Murders happened frequently in Hannibal Square. Now you can get some delicious food and drink and go shopping where crack deals and homicides happened frequently back in the day.

Sears had restaurants in some locations and I know the one in Tallahassee use to - great burgers.
