Stay home......

FlightAware's tracker shows you, in real time, just how many people are traveling by air for the holidays. The tracker, which is updating live on FlightAware's site, illustrates the thicket of planes traversing North America on Friday — one so dense, it's almost impossible to see the map beneath it.

Isn't that what air traffic normally looks like on a Friday? I don't think that carriers add too many extra routes for the holidays (Gary, correct me if I'm wrong).

I got through security (pre-check) at Midway in about five minutes yesterday and was able to fly standby to Nashville with no problem.

got through pre-check at EWR yesterday in 5 mins, maybe less

also united sucks. they're a glorified frontier airlines.

I will second the United slant. Since I'm in Dallas, I 100% have to connect in Houston on United which means an automatic 45 minute to hour delay because IAH is awful. Add in to that that I've never had a friendly flight crew with United and it is immediately on my "do not book" list.

I like United generally but agree most of the FAs need to be put out to pasture. The ones on the international routes are particularly nasty.

Why would you ever fly United through Houston when you can fly direct on American and Southwest to basically anywhere?

This doesn't seem random at all.

Direct flights to TLH! Giddy up.

Was supposed to fly home from DCA this evening at 1600. Finished early and called Delta last night. They changed me to a 0600 flight through JFK at no extra charge. Got first class upgrade for both my flights and on the flight from JFK to Sav. was in first class with no one next to me. Delta always hooks me up and to top it off was home by 1400 and that included a trip to the gym once I got back on the Island.

Looks pretty normal to me. Those airplane symbols are the size of 3 counties.

Not a random thought but an interesting random factoid, at least to me.

Agreed on size of planes, but.....

April 1, 2016
Ian Petchenik, a FlightRadar24 spokesperson, told USA TODAY that on April 1, there were 76,329 flights in the area covered by the video.

2016
Airlines are expecting 45.2 million passengers from Dec. 16 through Jan. 5, according to the group. With an average 73,000 more passengers each day during the holiday period, airlines have added 99,000 seats daily through more planes and larger aircraft, to accommodate the rush.

Holiday travel was projected to be especially busy this year, with 107.3 million people taking trips between Dec. 23 and Jan. 1, according to AAA estimates. Of those, 6.4 million were expected to fly — and, according to ABC, 2.7 million of those travelers are boarding Friday flights.

I live in Chicago, a United hub. Also a hub for American and South West. SW was immediately eliminated as my go to because a) I despise Midway Airport and b) I don't like their cattle car model.
My first 2-3 flights on American were a disaster so I picked United as my airline of choice.
I am now a Platinum member with the occasional year of Premier 1k.
I can honestly say I have never had a horrible experience with United. They have some basic equipment on most US routes but I've always had friendly staff and better than average customer service. Even when I screw up a reservation, they are always quick to correct the error at no charge.
If we are all being honest, there isn't a nickle's worth of difference between any of the domestic carriers. Flying in Europe puts them all to shame. With that said, I do think Delta is probably the best US airline. But they too have had a boatload of issues in the last year or so.

Little surprised to see so many folks talking about commercial air travel. I thought this board was geared for jet owners or at least private charter users. Almost feel like I need to take a shower.

Here's a scary air travel story, the farm in question is south of Warner Robins.

FAA: Farm equipment radio interference threatens air traffic

ATLANTA — Radio interference from a farm’s massive metal crop-watering structure is causing havoc for air traffic in the sky over Georgia, federal authorities said in a lawsuit filed this week.

The irrigation structure is on a south Georgia farm where the Federal Aviation Administration has a radio transmitter to relay signals that keep aircraft on course, according to the federal lawsuit.

Interference caused by the 1,200-foot-long (370-meter-long) structure forced the FAA to shut down its transmitter in February, affecting operations of nine airports. The proximity of Robins Air Force Base makes the situation even more serious, the government said in its complaint.

Flight safety has been compromised, the lawsuit warns.

“The potential for catastrophic harm is great,” U.S. Attorney Charles Peeler says in the complaint, which is also signed by the manager of an FAA facility in Columbus, Georgia.

The lawsuit doesn’t suggest the irrigation structure is actively transmitting a signal. Rather, it says the huge metal framework is degrading the FAA’s signal, which is susceptible to “reflection or scattering” by nearby structures.

The signal from the navigational equipment was so degraded that it had to be shut down in February to avoid transmitting false location information to airplanes, the complaint states. It has remained dormant since then, which has strained the air traffic control system and “creates an unnecessary risk to the traveling public,” it states.

The FAA said in a statement to The Associated Press on Friday that it can’t comment on litigation.

Three men identified by the FAA as land owners are listed as defendants. They couldn’t immediately be reached Friday.

Except for the Air Force base, the other airports affected by the situation are not named in the lawsuit. One of the closest commercial airports is Middle Georgia Regional Airport in Macon, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of the Pulaski County farm.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office is requesting an immediate hearing in court and an injunction that would force the defendants to move the structure — described as a center pivot overhead sprinkler system supported by trusses — outside of a 1,000-foot (300-meter) radius of the flight equipment so as not to interfere with it.

Agree with this. I've bounced between Platinum and 1K over the years and have basically the same view you do.

But still maintain the international FAs could use an attitude adjustment. I think they're just burned out.

Have had countless equipment delays on United out of ewr in the last year.
I also bregudge them for making me go to jersey in the first place.

I had a few lengthy ones this year. One was someone puked on the plane the flight before and the other somebody apparently destroyed the restroom with explosive diarrhea (according to one of the gate agents).

Anyone else, back in their bachelor days, use their empties as tree ornaments?
40 caps when I was growing up. We got a group of us together and crushed as many as possible. Thanks for the memories lol

Reminds me of the flight I took back from the national championship game in Pasadena. I was alone in a row right next to the bathroom and I see Tony Shalhoub go in and MURDER that toilet, the smell was so bad I changed seats on a pretty empty flight.
