Just got a transfer to my company’s office in Lakeland. Anyone have any advice on where to live? I’ve heard Plant City is better than Lakeland. Also heard Valrico is nice.

I grew up in Lakeland and currently live in Valrico. Southwest Lakeland is pretty nice and much more affordable. They are building it up and there is a nice outdoor mall and restaurants there. Actually looking to move back to Lakeland due to the insane housing prices and traffic in the Brandon/Valrico area. Plant city is a no go in my opinion. Not much to do at all and schools aren't as good as Lakeland or Valrico/lithia-fishawk area. Depends on what you are looking for. Let me know any other questions you may have.

The neighborhoods around the lakes are very nice. North, east, and west are pretty blue collar.

Sorry that you have to live in Lakeland or Plant City. If you're 40+ and don't mind slow small town life you'll be fine. If you can deal with the drive maybe Brandon is a bit better because you're close to Tampa.

41 with 2 elementary kids. Schools around Valrico area seem better on the rankings but how much can you believe those.

The schools in Valrico and Lithia/Fishawk are by far the best in the area. Not sure your financial situation, but you certainly will pay a premium to live in that area. Traffic is also terrible so your commute from there to Lakeland would be lengthy. Given your age and young children, I say south Lakeland sounds like your best bet.

Lakeland seems like its coming up a bit. It’s not some tiny town. I wouldn’t live in Plant City.

Lakeland's downtown is surprisingly large, the city has done a lot of good planning owning an electrical utility brings in the cash. I'd go for the southwest part of town.

I also grew up in Lakeland (west central in the shadow of Kathleen HS). The south side is the best but there are plenty of good locations on the north side as well. Stay away from anything central, east or west.

Downtown area has come along ways from when I graduate in the 80’s. We used to avoid Munn park at all cost. Even hated to stop at the red lights near there late at night. It’s a completely different atmosphere now. Pretty cool.

I still own a home in Lakeland and get back a few times a year.

BTW - Lakeland/Winter Haven metropolitan area is among the fastest growing in the nation. Like top 5. So there are growing pains and traffic can be a bear. Especially in the winter months.

Where is your office located? You might want to think about the commute when choosing where to live.

My thoughts on Polk County school system is this, you will have to be an involved parent and the school is less important. A lot of good opportunities in a large school system and your kids get to see all walks of life. From the best brightest to the sorriest trash on earth.

Having taught/coached in Polk County I agree with your statement 100%.

Currently live in NoVa so all these comments about traffic are pretty funny. You haven’t seen traffic like in NoVa. Think we’ve figured out that south Lakeland is where we will end up.

Still not knowing I’m what area your office is located makes it hard to give precise recommendations. There are great neighborhoods in all of the areas. Why just decide to put up with traffic because you always have!
