Going to Savannah tonight with the family and looking for a decent place to eat. Any recommendations? Not looking to break the bank, also should be kid friendly, thanks for the help!

Lol aren't those two things ("good place to eat" and "kid friendly") mutually exclusive? Then you want to add in "don't break the bank"? That's basically impossible.

I've got lots of good places to eat as I go to Savannah about twice a year usually to visit friends and relatives. The Olde Pink House is probably my all around favorite but I wouldn't say its kid friendly at all (as a matter of fact it's boozy and cramped as its historic both of which are why I love it).

As far as kid friendly, my....second cousins or first cousin once removed...whatever the ^+%* you call your cousins rugrats pretty much hate everything and throw temper tantrums over everything except Spanky's. The original on River Street is really kind of a drunk touron hangout but the other locations are pretty kid friendly. As you might guess it's got good pizza and better chicken fingers (they even claim to have invented them, regardless they're better than the Chick Fil A the Southern masses rave about).

So I'd probably rec Spanky's. It's far from foodie and not "southern cultured" cuisine but it would keep your rugrats happy and it is pretty cheap.

Spankys happy hour is awesome.

So I went and looked around at some Savannah food lists for "families" to see if I would rec any of them and there were a couple that were alright. Not true foodie experiences but decent food.

Probably Mrs Wilkes Dining Room most fits your description. It's a "family friendly" aka unsophisticated and no one will care if your rugrats scream their heads off but has a lot of standard Southern favorite food "done right". It's definitely not my personal fave but probably most suits the description of what you're looking for.

Sweet Potatoes is a more "modern" fusiony take on Southern classics that is still cheap and where other diners will not likely be on dates or otherwise care about children.

Ms. Wilkes isn't open for dinner (someone correct me if I'm wrong), and I wouldn't necessarily consider it kid friendly.

The Pirate's House is touristy but it's got the kind of history kids would enjoy. Ask to see the Shanghai room.

You're right about Mrs Wilkes being only open for lunch. I didn't realize that it's been awhile since I've been there and it's not my cup of tea. But it is family friendly (at least compared to places like the Olde Pink House).

Whatever you do, do not go to Paula Deen's place. It's a tourist trap.

I am racking my brain to remember the place we went a couple of years ago - it's in a converted very old pharmacy a few blocks from the center of town. Super place. If I can recall it I'll post the name.

Ditto on the Paula Deen's %*%*. It is the most overrated garbage in Savannah. Plus no matter how much she tries to play up that she was some kind of cultured Savannahite she grew up in Albany and didn't move to Savannah until her kids were almost grown when she was fleeing her "trailer trash" (her words not mine) ex-husband who was allegedly abusive. So going to her place isn't stepping back to old Savannah traditions...it's Albany Georgia trailer park food. Done poorly btw, I've even against my will had her same badly fried chicken in Cherokee NC and Tunica MS and it was no better (just even more expensive) than her original in Savannah.

I'd more willingly go down on Martha Stewart after an "ultra" marathon than eat Paula Deen's fried chicken.

The buffet at Paula Deen's is in front of the window. I stood out there with my sister and peeked in and said "Oh mah gawd, lookit what she is sellin' to all those Yankees...Mother would NEVER let us pass that off as good cookin'.

My sister grabs me by the arm and gets us out of there and when we were at a safe distance we just broke out laughing.

Any self respecting and well brought up Southern girl can cook better than Paula Deen.

I guess the easiest way to do this is to tell you where not to go eat. like people have said stay away from lady and sons that's Paula deens place. all the stuff on the river except for the bars and the Greek restaurant are tourist traps too. after that basically any place you walk into will have great food. I recommend 45 bistro, sapphire grill, noble fare, zunizi's, garabaldis, crystal beer parlor, local, soho cafe and circa. the pink house is ok but I've seen the guts of that place and wouldn't eat there if someone paid for me.
