"Spirit Airlines employee told student to flush emotional support hamster down the toilet, student alleges

A college student said she flushed her emotional support hamster down the toilet after Spirit Airlines refused to let her bring her furry pet on the plane.

Belen Aldecosea, 21, of Miami Beach, Florida, told the Miami Herald that she contacted Spirit Airlines before her flight from Baltimore to South Florida on Nov. 21, 2017, regarding traveling with her dwarf hamster, Pebbles. Aldecosea claimed the airline told her it was not a problem to bring her hamster on the flight.

However, when the student arrived at the airport she said the airline refused to let Pebbles on the plane. Aldecosea said she did not have many options since her family was in Florida and her friends were hours away. The student claimed a Spirit employee suggested she either flush Pebbles down the toilet or let the animal free."

Oh, and since I know the rules...

The idea of any type of nonhuman animal in the passenger cabin of an aircraft (other than seeing eye dogs) is utterly frivolous.

I'm supposed to feel bad for a girl who thought a real option was "flushing a hamster"? At the very least you just let the thing go. Who thinks flushing a living animal is a good idea?

I don't know what's more shocking; the fact she has a hamster for emotional support; or the fact the airline asked her to flush it?????

If flushing wasn't bad enough, she had to cover the drain with her foot because it kept trying to swim back out.

The emotional trauma was more than she could bare.

Did she actually flush it?

Did she actually flush it?
Yes, she did.

"Aldecosea skipped her flight and tried to rent a car instead, but said she was too young to rent one. So she did what she felt was the most humane choice.

“She was scared. I was scared. It was horrifying trying to put her in the toilet,” Aldecosea said. “I was emotional. I was crying. I sat there for a good 10 minutes crying in the stall.”

The student said she considered letting Pebbles run free outside but could not bear thinking of her hamster freezing to death or getting hit."

Then she's an even bigger dumbass.........go down to baggage and find someone to give it to, I doubt it would have been hard.

Is this a ruse?

Where is the link?

Pebbles being away from her for any amount of time and its little heart would cease to beat from anguish over the separation. She really had no other choice in the matter except maybe an easier means of death. Possibly putting it in a plastic bag while hooking up to a tail pipe of near by Taxi. When the driver would ask, "what are you doing behind my car"? She would have to explain that she was simply gassing her hamster for its own good.

Ok so she really flushed it?? She is going to need some serious emotional support going forward.

Imagine the poor lady in the stall next to her while she was trying to flush the hamster.

"Are you ok in there Miss." "Don't try to fight, to bear down."

So Pebbles has now been replaced. How is this woman (not child) allowed to have another pet when she just flushed a live animal down the toilet??

Other than happening to read this story, there's no way for pet stores to know the toilet-based horrors she's committed against her mousey therapy companions.

Perhaps if there were a national registry for animal abusers (which I would seriously endorse), pet sellers could see if the buyer had a history of being a terrible human being towards animals.

Now why do you have to be all rational and stuff?

Business idea!

she can be #2 in the data base right behind Mike Vick.

i would imagine most Animal controls would submit data on who they have work with. My guess is most people are repeat offenders.

This feels like something that can be easily converted into a South Park Episode.

Drama with officious / snarky airline staff, tears and hamster flushed, meets up with Hanky the Christmas poo, they have a couple adventures (in south Fl right?), then Richard finds and adopts. Its a happy ending. Queue the credits.
