Forgot how odd this process could be.
Turns out our friends didn't want our car so I put it up on Craigslist today. It was a 12 year old VW Jetta with 140k miles on it. My daily commuter. Blue book said it was worth about $2k so I listed it for $1900 just to get it off my insurance. Holy hell you'd think I was giving away free money. My phone rang every 30 seconds for an hour until I finally took the ad down an hour later. Multiple people promising more than asking for first crack. Clearly I asked too little. Anyway, sold the stupid thing but here is where you get the weird craigslist people. Guy drove cross town to buy it, paid cash, and left his car here taking the one he bought from me. 5 hours later a truck shows up and a couple guys jump out and hook his car up to a truck and tow it away. I don't go out, i dont want to know. Craigslist. Poor people.

I just bought the Topeak bike seat off craigslist. It's like $200 new, so I was communicating with this person (woman, I knew it was a woman) and it was like doing a CIA cross nation cold drop.

No names, no email addresses, no phone numbers. Inocuous public meeting place. The meeting place changed twice.

I said, look, I'll be in a red convertible 1975 Corvette, you can't miss me. I'll be in the front of the parking lot.

I watched her drive around the lot 3 times and scope me out, then park 10 spaces away (totally empty lot)

To sell me this.

For $60.

Wifey got all excited about getting shed of some old furniture. She sold on a local swap shop kinda site.I drove all over the place meeting people to pass the junk off... I told her it cost more to deliver it than she got paid.
Did kinda feel good about our daughters old bed going to a young girl who had never had her own bed.

Some of the peeps who responded had that creep like quality.... Did not want to give out contact info, wanted to meet in wierd locations. Wait, what, I am the weirdo here?

I've been looking for 99-01 4Runner on there. Every single one is being sold by somebody whose first language isn't English...and who doesn't hesitate to drop their jacked up price down to KBB once you make an offer. One guy disappeared when I asked for the VIN, so I called him from a friend's phone and he said he was busy. I later texted him and said I guess running the VIN would mess up your flipping gig. I flagged him and the dude starts text taunting me about how he's still gonna sell it, flag me all day bro, etc. He'll probably still sell it but not on Craigslist or Autotrader

You better make sure your name is taken off the title. A lot of people try to avoid paying taxes, so they don't transfer the title until they sell it.

A friend sold a patio set through Craigslist. My friend foolishly left her garage door open. While the woman was checking out the patio set, her son was helping himself to something in the garage. Luckily, my friend happened to notice the item was missing right away and called them on their cell phone. She told them to bring it back immediately, or she would call the police. They brought it back and got a lecture.

the one time I sold a car on Craigslist, I transacted the whole thing AT the DMV...

I've had very good luck buying and selling stuff on CL. I have bought/sold bikes, furniture, cell phones, cars, etc...

This morning I'm going to buy a phone. Galaxy Relay - wife likes the keyboard, but TMobile doesn't sell them anymore.

Anyway, always meet in a public place. Be careful even then if you are doing a deal for more than a few hundred dollars.
