Has any of you jokers bought any before?

If yes did you try any of it yet?

Is it good and do you recommend a specific brand?

I’ve had a couple of MREs while hiking the AT. One was chili and the other was a chicken stew sort. They weren’t bad especially when you’re hiking all day and starving. Didn’t realize how hot they got. Anyways I survived.

Hope this help.

I imagine they are like hiking food. Ok, but not great. Everything is kind of a flavored mush, though the creme brûlée desert is suorisingly good and the breakfast scrambles are alright. My son actually likes to eat them at home sometime.

The Mountain House and Backpacker's Pantry meals can be really good. You need to kind of think before you buy, but most of them are at least average, and some are really good. The MH beef stroganoff and the BP Santa Fe Chicken are both awesome. Surprisingly, the MH breakfast hash and biscuits and gravy are also both great.

I’ve heard from a friend that you can get real US military MREs on eBay by the box. And that friend said that military MREs can last years maybe a decade or more perfectly fine if they’re stored in a ACed room. That friend said that as long as you don’t have to eat them repeatedly they are actually quite tasty. That friend has four boxes of MREs stored along with a antimicrobial water filter and some Gatorade and distilled water in case of emergency like a hurricane. And the friend will periodically raid the MRE boxes for when he goes on a long multi day hikes about once or twice a year.

Now my friend hasn’t tried the French Army RIEs but you can get those online as well and they’re supposedly even better with things like venison meat spread, pork roulette, duck liver pate, cassoulet, etc...

We tried some Thrive products when my kids were young. They really liked the freeze dried fruit and veggies. Good shelf life, okay price, every product we tried wasn't bad (mostly just the fruit / veggies that were freeze dried). I haven't ordered more as you can get fresh cheaper, but the shelf life of the Thrive stuff meets your ask of "survival foods".

I haven't eaten MREs since the military but some of them are better than one would expect.

If my friend was ordering some American MREs he would probably go with this 2020 inspection date (meaning less than a year old) MREs that come with both meal cases (so 24 unique MREs).

https://m.ebay.com/itm/Military-MRE...275806?hash=item25ed50a71e:g:q8gAAOSwd-panIZ~

Or something like that. There was cheaper but even less sales and this is about the lowest number of sales my friend would even consider buying from.

The French RIEs go for double or more, but if my friend wanted a lot of quality he would go with this one.

My friend has never purchased the French ones because like on the above no reputable EBayer sells them as the French are far more aggressive with suing over missing rations. The above is new and all menus but buyer beware the seller may not send it so you might have to argue with EBay to get a return of funds.

My friend whispered to me that he would instead probably buy the cheaper American stuff from more reliable sellers and maybe get one older French meal for cheap just to try for S&Gs. The French only have 14 not 24 meals and menus 1-7 are Muslim friendly (ie no pork, 8-14 have pork products in them).

This is out of date info but you can see what the old French menus consisted of. Some very interesting stuff!

http://www.mreinfo.com/international-rations/french-rcir/

From this eBay provider which sells them individually like such

http://vi.raptor.ebaydesc.com/ws/eB...8&pm=1&ds=0&t=1522324659000&ver=0&cspheader=1

It looks like they have (per the seller) these menus not counting all the snacks, candies, and drinks.

Menu #1 = Ostrich in cranberries sauce + Tuna fish with potatoes + Chicken pâté (appetizer)

Menu #2 = Salmon rice and vegetable + Chicken couscous + Tuna fish (appetizer)

Menu #4 = Kebab meatballs + Beef lasagna + Chicken pâté (appetizer)

Menu #5 = Beef tortellini + Oriental salad + Salmon pâté (appetizer)

Menu #6 = Chili con carne + Tuna fish salad + 100% duck pâté (appetizer)

Menu #10 = Potatoes with cheese and pork + Italian salad + Traditional pork pâté(appetizer)

Menu #11 = Veal in Marengo sauce + Pork risotto with mushrooms + Deer pâté (appetizer)

Menu #12 = Beef with carrots + Sausages in spicy sauce with rice + Fish and vegetables salad (appetizer)

Menu #14 = Pork with ravioles + Beef salad (to eat cold)+ Tuna fish in pickled sauce(appetizer)

Of those I can find a menu for it looks like Menu 11 for the win!

I was interested in the French ones. The American ones are easy to find. Yeah, 11 and 1 look good.

I usually hike with freeze dried food since it's lighter, but sometimes bring a ready to eat for convenience of not needing the stove after a long hike.

I did find it interesting that the military LRP rations are the same as Mountain House but with more calories. I might pick some of those up. The MREs could be cool for long range kayaking trips.

Here’s 11 by itself but very pricey. My friend is tempted though and has spent a lot more on a lot more frivolous stuff.

Mountain House makes the LRP rations. They have extra protein from the normal Mountain House meals.

Mountain House (as mentioned by some others)

I use this when I've done back country camping, I keep enough of it at the house for about a week for the family in case of emergency.

Mountain house that is

Well I have my semi auto .223 and 308 assault, I mean hunting rifles plus others for hunting

Stocking up for when the poopoo hits the fan

I have a 3/2 6 yrs old house on the old Kissimmee river between Okee and Sebring

Be prepared is the motto

I found a cheaper source for French MREs. PM “Delicious” on this thread.

MREs were made for caloric intake. Thought being when you are in the field or fighting you burn a ton of calories. The taste can be mitigated by adding simple things like spices and Tabasco sauce. They typically last about 10 years or so. Eating them on a regular basis will insure you do not take a dump for days. If I was doing normal life things I would maybe eat 1 1/2 a day. Eating 3 of them a day might kill you.

My old man was still active marine infantry when I was in college (20 yrs ago). He would send me a case every now and then and my friends would think I was sick when I’d bust them out and chow down on them. They did get a kick out of blowing up 2 liters with the chemical ovens.

I liked a few of them a lot , I recall beef stew was a winner, some were ok, and some horrible, but like Ranger said, knowing the tricks on what to add and how to mix items from different meals helped a lot.
