My turn to use the LR as a personal Angie's List.

On Friday the AC in my car started blowing only slightly cool air. It's always worked like a champ (blowing cold before I get out of the parking lot most of the time).
Black car in Tally heat with no AC isn't really a choice. Any recommendations on who to take the car to, and as importantly, who not to take the car to?

TIA

I use Newman's for everything. They are more than fair on their prices and are really easy to work with.

I concur on Newman's for A/C work. Fixed my A/C on my truck a few years back and told me all it was was a loose wire. They weren't even going to charge me. I went ahead and had them recharge my Freon so I could pay them something. Honest folks.

FYI the new refrigerant has particles that are much smaller than the old stuff (by new, I mean any car built after 1993)... 134a is the code. This means it is not a matter of IF there is a leak like the old stuff but rather they are all leaking after a couple of years to some degree.

What I found is once a car gets to 5 years old I top off the 134a at the beginning of each season. Every year all my cars are a bit low and usually one big can will do all of them. For all you normal people with a reasonable amount of cars a small can will likely do ya just fine.

If you go this route... don't overfill. And if you this route it keeps positive pressure on the AC system so you don't have to pay for a full evacuation and refill as would be the case if your system gets very low.

A symptom of an AC system that is low but not depleted is the compressor cycling on and off when the car is hot and the AC is on full max. you can hear it cycle on and off and you can watch the clutch engage/disengage if you look at the pulley. What happens is the compressor cycles on and pulls the refrigerant in... since there isn't enough in the system as a whole it will run until the low pressure cutoff senses low pressure and it kicks the compressor off... the refrigerant distributes through the system again causing the low pressure switch to disengage and the compressor kicks back on. It will half cool like this until the pressure gets too low to ever engage the compressor.

Just get a new car.

If I could find a car as fun to drive for the same money, I would.
C5 ZO6 FTW

I'll stop by Newman's this week. Thanks, everyone.
