...google says somewhere between 51/2 to 6 hrs....all on I 10.
Is that accurate?
thx

Seems about right, from what I can recall. You get an hour traveling to NOLA.

That seems about an hour too long as I do it fairly frequently (once a quarter) but I've literally never driven straight through. I usually stop to eat at McGuires in Pensacola or the Catfish Charlie or Boomtown buffet (plus some gambling) in Biloxi and then usually stop at PoFolks or El Jalisco in Marianna on the way back.

Thanks all.
My kid at FSU's classes end at 1:30PM Friday and she is trying to meet us in New Orleans that night for a Bday dinner.

Where you going? Went to Peche a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it.

I'm heading over there tomorrow and will probably--if we get out early--go to Willie Mae's Scotch House to pay my respects.

So it's 393 miles from my house and I usually do about eight to ten over like most people on average so that would be 4.9 hours and you'll need to fill up once most likely unless completely topped off so a little more than five hours is how long it would take me if I actually drove straight through. So if she left at 1:30 since you gain an hour going TO NOLA she should be there around 5:30-6 PM if she doesn't stop to eat like I always do.

Yes, close to 6 hrs all on I-10. Probably my least favorite drive to make. Very flat, very boring and I typically feel awful on the way home.

So, you are saying even with stopping and eating it takes you 4.5-5 hours? Do you drive 125?

We are going to Arnaud's on Bienville...16th bday for my youngest...will be in NO for an Irish Festival that she will be competing in that Saturday.

No, I said IF I didn't stop other than gas it would be about five hours. I ALWAYS stop though. My wife and I usually leave at 5 on a Friday and then grab some food and/or a little gambling in Biloxi or Pensacola which puts us on Frenchmen Street roughly around 11. Spend a couple of hours catching great live music and sipping on beer then head to the French Quarter for a nightcap hand grenade or two and a hurricane at Patty O's with the drunken tourists and then sleep until brunch at our NOLA hotel.

Cool, going old school....trout amadine and redfish Ponchartrain are very good and, of course, their oysters

Yep. Unless you drive with a woman who always insists on stopping for leasurely dining at a restaurant, then it takes 7 hours....

Yeah that's about what I usually do (5 pm leaving Tally and 11ish pulling into NOLA) but I can't solely blame my wife. I love the craftbrew beer and great relatively cheap steaks at McGuires, the AYCE catfish at Catfish Charlies and the catfish, gumbo and quick gambling fix at Boomtown too much to skip right over them.

Thanks all.

Enjoy. That supposed to be one of the nicer places. It was on our list but we've ended up going to Commander's Palace and Brennans.

If you want an intriguing breakfast buffet and brunch layout the next day, try the Court of Two Sisters. Choice of indoor dining or outdoor court, depending on the weather. Live music that isn't overbearing-- laid back jazz with bass, piano.

You're making the right choices! I've always found Antoines, Gallatoires and Arnauds as overhyped but Commanders Palace and Brennan's are fantastic old school "Madame" restaurants. CP is one of my favorite places anywhere although I usually go to its cheaper, more laid back and better located Cafe Adelaide "younger sister" as it has many of the same recipes.

Cool to know. I'll have Café Adelaide on our option list next time.

Gallatoires on Friday afternoon with high society is a good time....a very good time.

If I eat near the French Quarter I usually do Cafe Adelaide or Bayona as both are a close walk but occassionally I grab a muffuletta from Central Grocery (never found one that was close to as good even Cochon Butcher), grab the chargrilled oysters and a ten napkin roast beef Po boy from Acme or some lamb ribs and jambalaya from Coops Place. And save the fancier dinners for when we're not in the FQ.

I was strictly talking the food quality. Gallatoires, Arnauds and Antoines have been in business for decades maybe even centuries so they know how to generate a good time and have good (but not great imo) food.

#1 - we have a game saturday what is she thinking?

#2 - I'd be a little worried about Friday afternoon traffic in Pcola and/or Mobile

It's the quicker and cheaper service version of CP with the same head chef and owners but it's located midway between the FQ and Harrah's so it's quite convenient. Plus the attached Swizzle Stick Bar is tied with the Sazerac Bar in the Roosevelt for the best "fancy cocktail" bar in NOLA. Just absolutely amazing drinks.

I made my 1st Sazerac the other night in preparation for the trip.
My wife used to go to NO a lot as a child as grew up in Fairhope Alabama...memories of places like Brennens and Arnaud's etc...
Saturday AM we will be in a place called Kingsley House on Constance street...which is about a mile from Ugly Dog Saloon and BBQ where the NO FSU club has game watching parties...hope to walk there after the Irish festival done.

Ha! I know that bar. Didn't know that is where FSU club met. I usually stay down the street at the Renaissance Arts. You are not too far from Cochon Butcher.

A Sazerac is one of those cocktails that when done properly (like at the Sazerac Bar, Swizzlestick bar, Tujagues, and Carousel Bar) is one of the best on the planet but a bad one or even a mediocre one is basically undrinkable. And that's why I can honestly say I've never tried to make one at home.

Speaking of the Swizzlestick bar, I see theyve removed the Wild Magnolia from their bar menu which uses inhouse brewed bitters made with magnolia flowers and HOPEFULLY you can still get it off menu. It was basically the best of New Orleans in a glass and I'll be disappointed if you can't still get it.

I've always been able to do it in 5 hours, but then again my record from Orlando to Tallahassee is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

Just curious, but how expensive are all these restaurants you guys are suggesting?

Coop's Place is $10-20 for main courses
Emeril's New Orleans is $15-30 for mains
Cafe Adelaide is $20-30 for mains
Bayona is $25-35 for mains
Brennan's is $25-35 for mains
Antoine's is $25-45 for mains
Arnaud's is $25-45 for mains
Commanders Palace is $35-50 for mains

We had a family get together there in August. You'd think I'd recall, as much as it cut into my wallet, but I can't remember what we paid at the Court of Two Sisters brunch buffet (fantastic). On line says $47 dollars but I just don't recall it being that much. Maybe that was one of the meals I didn't pay for ;)

Arnaud's is pretty expensive. A la carte menu on top of that. So $30 for redfish Ponchratrain. But it is just the fish.

Peche had several small plates that are $12-$18

Friday afternoon at Gallatoirs can be very expensive when you count all the martinis

You can find coupons for it in the $30-35 range. But whatever it is, it's worth it. I make sure I always take NOLA nubes there as it's not the absolute best at turtle soup, grillades, jambalaya etc, but it's close. And it DOES have the best vanilla ice cream I've had anywhere especially when topped with bananas foster or praline sauce.

1. Arnaud's is decent. They have a pretty cool bar.

2. Stay away from Two Sisters.

3. If you want brunch, hit up Elizabeth's in the Bywater.

I think Brennan's is a bit more expensive than what Tribe listed, if memory serves.

And it's totally worth it too, I might add.

I've never understood the locals hatred of Two Sisters. I assume it's just because it's pricey compared to regular brunch places, but it's really good items and an enormous selection. Their turtle soup isn't as good as CP, Brennan's and CA but it's close enough especially as a brunch with live music. I've never had anything but rave reviews and I always force our party to go when there are nubes in it. It is NOT the NOLA version of Lady and Sons ie a really overrated POS. It's really good and I make their items frequently at home (if you sign up for their email list they send out coupons and recipes for their best items relatively frequently although I'm still waiting on their vanilla ice cream recipe.).
