The FSU-Bama football teams kick off on Saturday, but the game has already started.
All of the misdirection, closed practices, silent treatment--Jimbo and Saban are already coaching against each other.
The things that are happening here with MT are happening at Bama too. Is Raekwon Davis playing? Kid got shot in the leg during game week. Saban says he's day-to-day.
Here's his quote: "We're still gathering information," Saban said. "It doesn't seem like our players were guilty of anything other than being out late, which doesn't make me happy. But it is what it is. He is released from the hospital. He's here (and) he's getting treatment."
"What his status is moving forward will be a medical decision, not something we can really comment on here," Saban said.
These communications misdirections are a pain for us as fans to deal with. But Belichick, Saban, and Jimbo all use this method to some degree. They don't do this because they want to frustrate their fans. They do it to minimize anticipated weak spots.
Both coaches say this game will come down to execution. Execution is directly related to practice reps. Coaches have limited practice time with players. So by keeping the other team--and their own fans--guessing, Bama and FSU are both trying to limit the other team's practice reps designed to exploit a potential weak spot.
I know many of us are inclined to say, "This is such a small deal. It won't make a difference anyway. What difference would a few practice reps really make?"
I guarantee you that Jimbo and Saban think those reps matter.
Jimbo and Saban both focus on details, inches, crumbs.
Their teams will finally be in the same building on Saturday, but they Saban and Jimbo both realize that the game has already started.
