Is now when I watch The Dark Knight I root for the joker. Joker is an incredible movie but is the background on the character correct? I began feeling bad for him and frankly the way mental health is looked at in Joker is his behavior justified, as in later in life?

I know the Joker movie is not in the same series as Nolan’s Batman but if you put the two together does anyone else get the same sentiment?

I don’t really have an answer for you but just wanted to say that I loved the Joker. I don’t watch many movies and even fewer actually keep me interested. I don’t think it would be weird to have some empathy for the Joker. I like that it shows how people, even the evil ones, are usually products of their background and/or mental health. That’s not to say it’s a valid excuse but just that “good and evil” aren’t that simple.

But the problem is if you go back to the comics or the the old sitcom the good verses evil is clear, at least to me. That’s why I ask about the background of the joker- was it ever established via the comics? I don’t recall/ don’t think so. The Joker movie as well done as it was leaves us (again at least me) rooting for him. Isn’t this anti- the general storyline of Batman vs Joker?

Keep in mind... The joker is an unreliable source. His information is all false, or an extreme exaggeration.

Imagine... The movie is told from his perspective, and maybe is a flashback (he's speaking with the social worker at the end). He could have (and was) lying to her the whole time, and murdered her too.

The comic books did have some background stories, similar to the background in batman 89.
