The "Star" position???

Can someone with a better handle on our Defense explain the philosophy of the "Star" position. I understand that with all these wide open spread offenses the need to have a "free lance" type guy that you can move all over the field but I feel like it has had a negative impact on our pass defense. I look forward to some good explanations.
