3 hours from Hawaii is only 1:45 to 2 hrs from SFO. So it was quicker to go to SFO then continue on to Hawaii. Could have been a mechanical problem that they wanted to fix in SFO.

I didn’t realize it was only a 2 hour flight from SFO to Hawaii.

It was in the air, between SF and Hawaii - but closer to SF than HI, so it was quicker to turn around and backtrack to SF
