I can only imagine how happy they are to be freed!

Considering that college kid that took down the sign of Kim came back in a coma after a year of hard labor and later died in the US, I bet these three are very happy to be back and alive.

My understanding is international politics have much to do with their imprisonment and newfound freedom.

Some may perceive that, but having been in that business I can honestly tell you the people working these issues are career people and not elected or politically appointed ones.

No offense, but mid level bureaucrats have zip to do with these guys being released now.
They're just chips in a larger game.

You think the decision on whether or not the Norks release American hostages doesn't get made at the top?
Enlighten me how this really works.

Lots of behind the scenes stuff my man....is it political leverage at the end of the day, sure! There are a lot of people that have to “leave” a country that you’ll never hear about though, and that’s all I’ll say.

I'm looking forward to the day ~32,000 people "leave" a country on the other side of the globe, but I expect we'll hear about it.
My uncle that passed away last month spent a year in the Korean mountains maintaining a Nike Hercules battery.
My hope is that his grandson never gets an opportunity like that.

That I can’t help you with.

Ultimately the question is: What is China up to/want? NK doesn't do anything with out the consent from China. Last month Kim Jong Un goes to China and afterwards his rhetoric is completely different. A few days ago he flies to China and a couple days later NK releases the 3 detainees.
This is great for the 3 men that were released but they've been pawns in a bigger game. Anyone with half a brain in their head should stay as far way from NK as they can.

Your right, and all of these scenarios involve negotiating, in this case having the US Secretary of State go there was our side of it, the regime wants credibility for them to spin it internally. Since we don’t have relations with them, we have to use back door channels to make things like this work, that’s where I was saying a lot of people behind the scenes made that happen.
