LATE REPORT

Fisher opens by saying Thursday was about how the team performed in situational play. He also wanted to assess how the players handled the "dog days" of preseason camp. He also brought up how he wants guys to give 100 percent and if they do, they'll play. If they don't, he'll tell them they need to be better.

He talked about sophomore receiver Keith Gavin. Fisher says, "he would run himself to his legs fell off ... I'll take a zillion Keith Gavin's." Fisher says Gavin comes to work every day with a tremendous attitude. He adds how Gavin understands his contributions can go beyond one moment like the Michigan game.

Fisher also talked about the music played during practice. Says they'll often play music and that there was nothing else to it than that. He also addressed Baveon Johnson. Says Johnson was hurt but says everyone is banged up at this point in camp.

Fisher is asked about Derrick Nnadi. Says if someone like Nnadi speaks up, guys know its bothering him. He says, "Whatever is right. Derrick does."

A reporter asks Fisher about having Ryan Leaf speak to the team. He says, "it's not about ball. It's about getting ready for life." Makes the point that its about getting speakers who can talk about different facets of life.

PLAYER UPDATES:

As Fisher said, Baveon Johnson was out but did not specify.

We saw George Campbell but he was not dressed to participate. Alexander Marshall, Dontavious Jackson, Nate Andrews, Adam Torres, Brady Scott and Jalen Wilkerson were also held out of practice.

Matthew Thomas was not at practice. Fisher said Tuesday that Thomas is taking care of a few things.

We did see Josh Sweat return during pursuit drills.

EARLY REPORT

Several college football teams around the nation are heading into the long days of preseason camp and at this point, the smallest detail can make a big difference. At Florida State, it's the second day of having music played at practice.

The playlist, which was curated by strength and conditioning coach Vic Viloria, had an older feel to start. When the music started, the first song everyone heard was Aerosmith's cover of The Beatles' hit "Come Together."

FSU usually doesn't have music at practice. There's a couple thoughts as to why the Seminoles had music going over the last two days. Some reporters on the beat feel it was a way to keep the players loose. Others believe it could be the playlist for the warmups at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium when FSU opens against Alabama on Sept. 2.

Before we continue wanted to throw out a reminder that we cannot talk about injured players or anyone else who was absent until we speak with Jimbo Fisher after practice.

Now, for the news:

>Fisher was really vocal with the quarterbacks and running backs during practice. At one point, he yelled at one of the freshman quarterbacks for a poor pass. Then he yelled at the same quarterback for poor footwork. Fisher then yelled at the tight end for not catching the poor pass which had poor footwork.

>Fisher did seem pleased with Deondre Francois from what we observed. Francois had a throw to tight end Ryan Izzo which was in stride and perfectly placed. We've seen a lot of Francois throwing to Izzo in the preseason. Maybe it's a sign of things to come later this season?

>Staying with the tight ends. We saw them go over and work with the offensive line to practice blocking out of a two tight-end set. Observing the group was interesting given the coaching styles of tight ends coach Tim Brewster and offensive line coach Rick Trickett. Brewster, Fisher and Trickett are easily the three most verbal coaches during drills. Brewster and Trickett were actually pretty quiet as they appeared pleased with the blocking schemes.

>Derrick Kelly and Josh Ball worked at left tackle while Landon Dickerson and Ethan Frith were at left guard. Alec Eberle and Corey Martinez were at center. Cole Minshew and Mike Arnold took reps at right guard while Rick Leonard and Abdul Bello were at right tackle.

>We saw another interesting drill with the running backs. The goal of the drill was for the running backs to high step over three tackling dummies before dropping their shoulder into a graduate assistant who was simulating a would-be tackler. Don't worry. The GA's had a big, protective pad to embrace the contact.

>Ira Schoffel said he noticed receivers coach Lawrence Dawsey was not happy with his group during one of the drills. He had them stop and start running wind sprints.

>There were some visitors today as well. Scouts from the Bengals, Broncos, Colts and Rams were at practice. So was a television crew from Alabama.

We'll be able to provide more news and injury updates from practice after we've talked with Jimbo Fisher. Until next time, bye for now.
