Finally bringing someone to clean the house and help take some pressure off me and the pregnant wife who is still studying for professional licensure exams. Do you tip every time, only on special occasions? I mean we are paying an hourly rate, so I figured that would be good, but I don't want to be that guy.

Actually, I don’t know if that’s something you’re supposed to do or not. But I don’t tip on takeout orders either and apparently that’s now something we’re supposed to do because Restaurant owners refuse to pay a living wage to their grunts.

Same as whatserface up there. Usually do a double payment at Christmas and toss an extra $50 or so when I ask for something additional like cleaning out the fridge.

That's something I'll never do, the workers will die of starvation first, don't care.

Sometimes the guy who owns the bidnez does the cleaning, in which case we don’t tip. Usually it’s one of his handful of employees in which case we tip because we can afford it and you know they can use it.

Mine come once a week. I don't tip them but I do give them a Christmas gift card. If I ask them to clean something out of their normal scope I ask the how much it would cost and pay them what that ask. It's their job, they are professionals, there shouldn't be any fairy tale guess work in hoping your arre offering the right amount of guess money.

I wouldn't tip but I know my wife does.

I ask why are we tipping them? For good service? Isn't that what we just paid the $150 or whatever for?

I don't get it.

My wife is a bleeding heart lib (I’m just a regular lib) so we tip for two reasons: 1. We have money; and 2. The people who we’re tipping generally have a lot less than we do.

I’m not saying it’s right, and i’d tip less or perhaps not at all in many cases, but it makes the wife feel good, and I’m sure you know rule #1 of a successful marriage.

I get that, but these housekeepers work for themselves and keep what they make. I would be more inclined to tip if they were traditional employees.

We don’t tip our maid. She gets paid every week. But we are generous with gifts, and remember her kids on birthdays and holidays. They are an extended part of our own family, in a way. It’s not just everyone who gets to see JHN’s underwear drawer.

If you treat people well, you’ll be surprised how they will help you in a pinch. The converse is also true.

This is me. Sure holidays you get something, kids bday etc. But when we agreed to a price and you did what you were asked , why am I giving you extra money. If mean mr. bossman isn't paying you enough then get a new job, start your own business, become more marketable in the work force. Tipping has become the new scam; made your sandwich tip please, wiped off your table at the fast food place tip please, bagged your groceries tip please.

wth is a housekeeper?

i understand folks aversion to tipping for take out, but i was getting tips for putting together take out orders when i worked in a tallahassee restaurant in 1995. let's not pretend like it's a new concept.

We don’t tip. I mean, we are paying almost a car payment to get the house cleaned every two weeks. We also don’t ask for anything out of normal. But I do give them some cash at Christmas. I am quite sure nobody tips their lawn service guys every two weeks or the pool guy every week. Nobody tips pest control person who sprays house 2-6 times a year. Nobody tips the gutter/roof folks who may come out every 3-4 months. Repeating maid service should be no different then, regardless if they own business or work for business.

We tip our housekeeper about $20 + lunch every time. Our gardeners get $10/each and a beer every time they come, unless they piss me off by doing something stupid. In that case, they just get a beer and more explicit instructions. All of our takeout and delivery guys are tipped at least 15% per order. We have a weekday cook whom we tip in transportation and food. The motivation is similar to what was mentioned above: we make a lot more than they do, and we definitely remember what it was like to bust your ass for a lot less money. We know how much a tip meant to us, so we are going to make certain we pay that forward.

What do you tip the people who raise the chalice to your lips?

:)

More power to you and I like many remember the lean days and tip accordingly where tipping is required.
Take out as long as everything I asked for is in the order I tip by rounding up usually, it is expense account money anyways.
If you are a waiter and pleasant, food is on time and correct you get 20%, if you are fun and make a mild effort to make my restaurant experience enjoyable you get 30%, if you suck you still get 10% maybe you are having a bad day.
When it comes to plumbers, HVAC guy, contractors etc. I don't tip; but I have made them lunch and in one case where the poor guy was here till after dinner made him dinner and let him take it home.
If you make my sandwich, wipe a table, etc. no tip and as others have mentioned the house keeper, lawn guy etc. take cash by choice and we all know why they do that.
