Moving to D.C. in the near future. The wife and I are going to take a trip during the middle of this month to visit. We are flying in to Dulles and staying in the city for a few nights before we head to the suburbs to visit family.

I am trying to figure out travel while we are in the city. From my times there before, I know it is ideal to ride the metro. With just a few days in the city, I am trying to figure out if it is smart to purchase day passes or to just pay when we ride. Does anyone have any advice?

Are you wanting to see the sites or search for neighborhoods to live in? Will you be in DC or in a suburb?

And yes, since you'll be moving there, just get the smartcard.

Just got back from a week in DC. The cards are easy. Uber is also very, very reasonable ( especially for two) and convenient.

We would like to do both... Obviously you cant see all of the sites in that short amount of time, but we are staying in the city near downtown.

If you're fast walkers, you could see the Mall end to end and loop over to the Roosevelt/Jefferson memorials and fit in a visit to the Holocaust Museum. It's a lot of walking in a day, but I've done it. Allow a couple hours for the Holocaust. That way you'd at least see the basics. Then see Arlington Cemetery the next morning.

I'd spend more time focusing on finding a place to live, especially if this is going to be your only trip out before you move. Have you narrowed down your choices? If not, do that before you leave. If you can find a place that will either be close to the metro and/or allow you to commute against the flow, that would be great.

Forget walking around or the Metro if you're trying to sight see - the best way to maximize how much you can see in the time that you have is the hop on/hop off bus tours that run to each of the sights/monuments/memorials around DC. They run every 15-20 minutes. You can hop off when you want, or stay on and bypass things you don't want to see. they give stories and history while you're riding around on the bus. They also go over to Arlington for the National Cemetery. There are several different companies that run these tours - here's one.

Definitely head over to Archives and see the Declaration Of Independance few more years and you won't be able to see anything. I was shocked at how little is there now. We visited in January. Yes buy the Smartcard and reload as needed.

I have a house for sale if you are looking.

Don't forget when you're up there in DC to ask Obama when he's gonna invite the Noles to celebrate the 2014 national championship.
