My FIL has an amazing record collection that my wife will inherit, but we don’t own a record player. I’ve done a small amount of research, but I honestly know nothing about record players. Does anyone have recommendations on a good unit under $500? I have a Sonos system in the house, so I would really like it to be compatible with my current set up.

What say you Locker Room?

I’m guessing it’s to convert records to mp3 if you want? I’d like to do that with my old cassette tapes. I got rid of my tape deck years ago but I still own a ton of cassettes. Would like to listen and digitize them. I see devices on Amazon that do that but they get pretty bad reviews.

Most receivers today don't have a phono input like they used to to amplify the turntable's signal. So look for a turntable that has the ability to hook up to the aux input on your receiver. I think there is an additional converter box that will allow an older turntable to go to a modern receiver.

I don't know about most, but I just bought a new Yamaha receiver and it most certainly does have a phono input. In fact I just plugged in my new audio technica turntable($300) into it.

Excellent. I have an old Technics (Panasonic) that I bought in the '70s at the BX Audio store in Germany.

we just got our daughter a low end audio-technica turntable and some powered speakers. No receiver needed! Whole thing was < $300.

I have a Thorens turntable from my fil's estate, found out I can probably get good money for it on eBay. He had some other high end, vintage electronics, even cassette recorders still have some value.

A bit off topic, but I was quite surprised recently when I heard the same song played on a cd and on a vinyl record (a new one), and I actually preferred the sound of the record. Sounded 'warmer' if that makes any sense....
