FSU did scrimmage today, and Jimbo seemed really pleased with most of it. He said Sean Maguire played "really well," and he raved about the running backs. They kept Dalvin Cook's work down a bit, so the other backs got more work, and Jacques Patrick apparently was outstanding. Mario Pender and Jonathan Vickers also got a lot of praise. We'll have more on that later in our Insider Report.

On Maguire, Jimbo said he really continues to have a great spring. He said the other QBs had some nice moments, but doesn't sound like they're making up any ground. He did say John Franklin had a nice 2-minute drive at the end of practice.

The offensive line is short-handed, and there is some news there. Ryan Hoefeld underwent surgery to repair the meniscus in a knee. That's why he has been out. And as I said earlier, Mavety and Kelly are out. So they had to use 8 offensive linemen the whole day. Rod Johnson said the linemen called themselves the "Elite Eight." As thin as they are, Jimbo said they did a good job up front.

Defensively, it sounds like Jalen Ramsey had a really big day. I actually saw Jimbo go up to Jalen to compliment him at the end of practice. It was the first thing Jimbo did when they broke the huddle.

Jimbo also had good things to say about the pass rush and some things they did package-wise on third downs. He said Jacob Pugh had a couple of sacks

Overall, Jimbo said it was pretty even -- with offense and defense winning at different times. He really liked how physical the team was. Said he thinks they can be a physical football team.

Gene will have Jimbo up shortly, and we'll have more coverage up this evening.

EARLY UPDATE

FSU is supposed to scrimmage today, but the practice was moved to the IPF due to weather concerns. It wasn't clear when we left following the open portion whether they were going to get the whole scrimmage in or not.

But there was plenty to report on otherwise:

A few players returned from their battles with the virus or other issues. That included Bobo Wilson, Ryan Green and Nile Lawrence-Stample. Was good to see them back.

Kermit Whitfield still appeared limited by his hamstring. Chad Mavety and Derrick Kelly were still out with their concussion symptoms. Da'Vante Phillips was out as well, but didn't seem serious.

Alec Eberle was out there working at center. He was splitting reps with Corey Martinez. And with Kelly and Mavety out, Brock Ruble worked again at first-team right tackle.

With Bobo back out there, the first WRs were Travis Rudolph, Bobo and Ermon Lane. Ja'Vonn Harrison worked in when they went 4-wide.

There didn't seem to be any changes with the first-team defense.

It looks like Travis Rudolph and Bobo Wilson are the top two return men on kickoffs and punts. They worked first-team with both. The second-team kick returners were Mario Pender and Dalvin Cook.

There was a ton of speed on the kickoff coverage team, with guys like Trey Marshall, Jalen Ramsey, Lamarcus Brutus, Nate Andrews, Ro'Derrick Hoskins, Jacob Pugh, Tyler Hunter, Lorenzo Featherston and a few others.

With Pro Day tomorrow, there were a number of visitors today. As well as most of the guys who will be working out (Mario Edwards, Ronald Darby, Cam Erving, etc.)

From ESPN, Desmond Howard and Sal Paolantonio were there. Several former 'Noles were checking things out too, including Devonta Freeman, Jamal Reynolds and Tra Thomas.

Jameis Winston's parents were there too and they were gracious when Gene and I chatted with them briefly. Antonor called Gene "Man Cave." Pretty funny.

2015 QB signee Deondre Francois was back at practice again as well.

Will have much more after practice around 6:30 or so.
