Swimming Vear qualifies for national championships

AUBURN, Ala. – Graduate student Samantha Vear qualified for the national championships as the No. 19/RV Florida State swimming and diving team competed on the second day of the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in Auburn, Alabama, on Monday.

Vear was one of three Seminoles to advance to the finals on Monday, and punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships in the 1-meter springboard event. Vear qualified for her third career nationals and is FSU’s seventh NCAA bid, after the women’s team saw six swimmers selected last week. The men’s swimming qualifiers have not been announced.

Eight FSU divers competed on the second day of the four-day Zone Championships, as the women began their week on 1-meter and the men continued their meet on 3-meter.

In the 1-meter final, Vear finished with a score of 584.30 points to place eighth overall and earn the top-nine finish and a spot at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Freshman Evelyn Hall also advanced to the final and was 15th with 510.30 points.

Sophomore John Bessire qualified for the 3-meter final. He was 18th overall with a score of 632.20.

Also on 1-meter, redshirt junior Kayleigh Clark was 21st with 240.85 points and senior Isabel Gregersen was 26th with 236.35.

On 3-meter, freshman Carlos Vargas was just behind Bessire in 19th with 323.00 points. Freshman Hayden Schroeder placed 29th with 307.50 and fellow first-year Noah Turner was 30th with 306.75 points.

The top nine finishers on women’s 1-meter and the top eight on men’s 3-meter advanced to the NCAA Championships.

The meet will continue on Tuesday, March 11, with the women on 3-meter at 12 p.m. ET and the men concluding their week on platform at 4:30 p.m. ET. The event will wrap up on Wednesday, March 12, with women on platform at 12 p.m. ET.

From the Zone B Diving Championships, top finishers in each event will qualify for the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. The top nine finishers in the women’s 1-meter, the top eight in the men’s 3-meter, the top seven in the men’s 1-meter and women’s 3-meter and platform and the top six finishers in the men’s platform all will punch their ticket to nationals in Federal Way, Washington.
