Anyone here ever done Vegas for the first weekend of the tournament? If so where’d you stay and where’s the best place to wager and take in the games?

I did about 20 years ago when it wasn’t as popular. I think we were at MGM or the old Planet Hollywood. It was fun because you actually got to sit in the sports book and got served. I hear now it’s so crowded that-if you are Joe Weekend Tourist placing a 20 on a 5 team parlay-you get stuck in some ballroom.

Plus doesn’t look like the Noles will be dancing this year

Vegas has gotten so damn expensive in the last few years, even the hotels now, they have that extra fee for the stadium, so good luck!

Just gotta go during the cheap weekends. There are still plenty of deals to be had even at the really nice hotels. Not during March though I’d assume.

The problem I always have is the airfare. Damn near impossible to get there for less than $500/person out of Tallahassee, regardless of the time of year.

Check out the March Madness in Las Vegas facebook group. Tons of great info. I went last year. Stayed in a friends timeshare attached to PH. Mostly just bounced around between sportsbooks and bars to catch games. Placed all my bets at PH and never had to wait more than a few minutes. Saturday and Sunday is much calmer than Thursday/Friday.

Truly one of the great benefits of living in Houston and having Hobby Airport about 15 minutes from my house - we can pretty much fly anywhere for very little. And, because we are more-or-less the midpoint of the country, it usually doesn't involve more than a 3 hour flight.

Probably the ONLY benefit of living in Houston LOL

This will be my 11th year in a row going. Always stay at Tresure Island cause the wife likes it and they comp our rooms. Not the best hotel but free is free. As meniotned above, it is expensive the first weekend. Doesn’t matter where you stay you can bounce around places. Every place will be packed. Mandalay Bay has a nice sports book. Lagasse Stadium is pretty cool but you have to reserve a table. You can still go and hang by the bar.
The second weekend is less crowded and more reasonably priced.

We were there last year for the Final Four games and it was much lower key than I expected. The madness is definitely during the opening weekend. Every $100 in sports bets gets you a drink ticket in the MGM and it's $125 in the Mirage. Both are nice sports books and have their own bar.

The fact that you said you are 15 minutes from ANYTHING in Houston is astounding. But 15 minutes from Hobby has me worried for your safety.

Nah, my hood is fine. I know you metroplex residents get scared at the sight of your own shadow

I was there for it two years ago. That time, I stayed at the Aria. Their Sportsbook was a total zoo. By the Friday, I was placing my bets at New York New York, where there was never a line. It's definitely worth a trip. Almost every bar you find will be a fun place to watch the games. It's cool to put money on every single game. Vegas is especially packed that (long) weekend, so be prepared.
