VR

Wow! Fallout 4 would be trippy to play with VR.

It is. Rad roaches are far more intimidating in vr. And death claws.

I haven’t played too far yet. I don’t ever really have much time. But, it was also cool to walk around in power armor.

The technology is neat. It can be buggy. Good to have some computer savvy.

Needs moving forward:

- higher resolution.
- more powerful video cards.
- more comfortable headsets.
- bigger fov.
- wireless.

Wild. Yeah, death claws and mirelurk queens made me jump without VR, can't imagine it otherwise. Fun game, I need to get my copy sent back to me so I can play through it again with a different allegiance.

My wife got me a Gear VR to use with my Galaxy S6 last Christmas. I tooled around with it for about an hour, and haven't used it since. It's cool, but it doesn't have much application for me, as I'm not a gamer.

It overheats my phone in short order and burns through the battery quickly. Much too quickly for any kind of extended immersive experience. While some of the applications were neat, the terrible picture quality and resolution made it no more than a novelty...it's like sitting a few feet from a 1980s tube tv, the picture is trash.

It works though...if I was a gamer or had a 4K or maybe 8K screen, I can see the allure. I just don't have any possible application for it right now.

Some of the coolest things aren’t games. For example, my wife is from Lithuania. She was able to walk around street view where she grew up via google earth. That pretty amazing.

There are now things like live concerts. This is in its infancy but I “went” to a show in London by some dj; pretty immersive.

The other day paramount had a free showing of top gun in 3D in a program called bigscreen. A novelty at this point, though the 3D effect in vr for a 3D movie is nearly perfect.

Ive gone on various museum tours. Visited science labs.

There are also vr chat programs and of course games.

What is life? – the world’s smartest people are learning more about our universe, and realizing that we are likely living in a simulation, so chase your dreams because none of this matters!

We can all stumble through life playing it safe and fearing death, or we can accept that we live in a universe that was created by a computer to entertain some higher beings, and the only thing that matters is enjoying this earthly experience. Choose your path.

“A child's rhyme stuck in my head
It said that life is but a dream
I've spent so many years in question
To find I've known this all along”

Is any of that available through PSVR or only through Oculus?

I don't have an oculus, I have a vive. With the vive you can access oculus specific content using revive. Valve sponsors the Vive and it uses 'Steam VR'.

As far as PSVR, I think some of this is available, but I haven't followed that platform too closely. PSVR supposedly is the most comfortable of the three headsets, but also lowest resolution and tracking (vive best tracking). There are also cross platform multiplayer games. For example, I played Star Trek Bridge Crew with three people, my brother (vive), an engineer in Washington (Occulus) and a game developer in California (PSVR). Seemed to work very well.

I was going to add this to the biggest tv thread...

fwiw, I think the real value of this tech is in augmented reality for training where you can see the real world and textbook/tutorial at the same time. IIRC studies are new but early ones say that you learn a lot faster this way.

Surprised not one else chimed in, it's easily assessable at this point and there have been threads about favorite adult stars and you all seem to know every one since 1970.

My assumption is low VR adoption, not low porn consumption.
Just guessing...

For those that have VR sets, have you experienced any side effects (eye strain, headaches, etc?).

This is transformative technology...just like 3D TV.

Or LaserDisc?

That was pretty cool. That remark they made about eternal life and resurrection made me remember a thought I had long ago. When my faith was struggling with the thought of how a dead person can be brought back and still be the same person. When I thought about it from the viewpoint of God as a computer having stored away the essence of every person, He would just have to restore from a backup.

Sales have been moving fairly steadily though I could see a 3D tv false start.

Oculus and vive both require very substantial PCs to operate well. That means gaming cards and those are expensive. The average person isn’t even really aware of gaming cards.

That’s why I thought about just putting my pinky toe in and buy the PSVR. I’ve already got a PS4 Pro so no need to buy anything beyond the VR setup.

I will say it’s kind of “suspicious” that you never see VR being demoed at places like Best Buy, Walmart etc... Makes you think it will be more like the Virtual Boy, just a footnote in gaming, rather than the new revolution.

If I didn’t already have a pc capable of vr, I would have gotten a psvr, though my brother got me the vive so there is that.

I’ve seen occlus demoed at Best Buy. I’ve also seen vive demoed at a Microsoft store. In fact that’s where I first tried the vive.

As far a virtual boy like footnote I don’t regret the vive. I’ve had a lot of fun with it over the past year.

Don’t do it....will blow your mind.

Stay away.

I think it’s important to note that there’s a difference between 360 degree videos and a vr/3D modeled environment. There is tech for doing 3D model transforms for vr. These are far more immersive than a 360 degree video.

I saw one where you can look at everything in front of you...a 180 view.

What would that be, vr3D or 360?

A lot of the programs do feel more like demoes and there are a lot independent studies currently involved. Few aaa titles.

There are a few though. Good bit of creativity going on right now.

Bridge crew was an interesting one. You can play it as a single player game. It’s boring. It would also be boring 2d. But in vr, you’ve got a captain, engineer, tactical officer, and helmsman. You sit in your station on the bridge and go on missions. It’s basically a role playing game and true team play. I found really engaging.

I don’t do much PC gaming as I’m not a big FPS and MMORPG fan. I do have an Alienware Alpha hooked up to the tv mainly for emulation and to play the strategy and simulation games I enjoy like Anno, Crusader Kings 2, Total War (warhammer mainly, but all of them), Cities, Stellaris, Europa Universalis, Offworld Trading Company, etc... But all of my other computers (HP Envy 34 inch curved all in one and two laptop hybrids Lenovo Yoga 910 and a Thinkpad Yoga X1 2nd gen) are exclusively for business purposes. So I don’t have a gaming tower capable of Oculus or Rive nor would I really want one unless I was convinced VR was really hear to stay as I don’t play the games most people like for gaming PCs and when I do play those games on occasion I just do it with either my XBone S or my PS4 Pro.

Honestly, I’ve got WAY too much gaming stuff as it is with the PS4 Pro, XBone S, Nintendo Switch and Alienware Alpha (plus my 30+ retro systems some of which I actually play (with my Vectrex honestly getting played more than any of the other systems although I break out the Virtual Boy, NeoGeo AES and Atari 2600 on occasion). It’s tough to say as I don’t get a lot of gaming time in anymore, but I probably spend the most time on the Switch followed by the XBone s and PS4 equally and only play the Alienware Alpha a couple times a month (but those become 8-10 hour sessions as I’m usually in some complex strategy or sim game), but I do play the Vectrex, NeoGeo and Virtual Boy more than you would think as they’re great for quick 5-15 min game sessions. But with all that, a Gaming Tower for me would be a waste of a couple grand as I’d never likely never have time for it.

That’s a lot of gaming equipment for sure. I’m in a similar boat in that I don’t have time to play, having to be an adult an all, and not retired.

I’ve got a one x, ps4, and a pc. The pc is multipurpose because I record music with it (drummer). I used to be exclusively a pc gamer. And I played competitive FPS, mouse/keyboard style. I do that very rarely now, electing for the more casual style of the console for those games. I still play them and competitively but against the lesser console competition (I’m old). Lately I’ve mostly used it for vr gaming of single player games that are graphically superior on pc, eg Witcher 3.
