She’s got rocked in every appearance so far this year! Hope it gets better because pitching will determine how far we go.

She made 2 bad pitches.
Only gave up 3 hits.
We helped out Fouts a lot at the plate swinging at pitches out of the strikezone.

Hopefully between now and our trip to Stillwater we can get some things figured out.
They look like the best team in the country at this point.

I just wonder if the offseason work to add a riseball has hurt her drop.

Not sure.
She even has a change of speeds that she didnt have.
Her pitch count is usually really low which means she is around the strike zone a lot.
I think college softball this year is gonna be more about scoring runs than shutdown pitching.
Im pretty sure our game with Alabama was the lowest scoring game of the entire tournament. Still all 3 runs were by the long ball.

Great if one can master all the pitches but common sense dictates the drop ball is more likely to produce more ground balls while the rise more fly balls. However, it isn’t going out of the park if it’s on the ground.

We struck out much more off Fouts. I think we had 5 or 6. Kat had no strikeouts against Alabama. Hard to say at this point in the season but I’m very happy she is a ‘Nole. Kat is talented and a tough competitor. I’d rather see us develop more consistency at the plate….too many swings at pitches well out of the strike zone.

Kat has been around 5 years.
People know what she throws and how she throws.
She gave up 2 runs to a top notch team. That was a good outing
where our offense did not produce.
In case you hadn't noticed pitchers who have been around awhile (years) begin to have more trouble than they ever had due to opposing teams knowing the book on them.
Montana Fouts was great yesterday because she did mix in offspeed with her rise. As a freshman and Soph she relied on her rise and her ERA and wins were great. Her ERA and wins have declined the past 2 years.
Valerie Cagle at Clemson was much better as a freshman (numbers wise) than last year. We actually made her cry!
Pitchers have to adapt or the hitters catch up.

Our bigger problem is batters who swing at pitches out of the strike zone.

Nothing happened to her, she just isn't a strikeout pitcher. Just like teams make a book on hitters, they do the same for pitchers. If you aren't a strikeout pitcher, teams will get the bat on the ball and they will eventually start dropping. Also puts more pressure on the defense.

If FSU is going to make a run at Oklahoma City, Reid is going to have to develop into the #1 pitcher. Otherwise, FSU will be lucky to get out of a regional.

I've been saying the last few years, the difference between FSU and the other powers in college softball is FSU doesn't have a dominate strikeout pitcher. It is much harder to win without one.

The catcher cannot hit...very slow bat. Shortstop is good defensively but cannot hit the ball out of the infield. We do not have the clutch bats to make it to Ok City much less win there.

Her bat speed is not the problem. Her pitch selection is.
As to our team, it's way too early to write us off.
What will our pitching staff look like in May?
We are certainly deeper than we have been.
I hope Madi Balk gets some more opportunities.

I believe that shortstop had all the rbi in the UCLA game from line drives to the outfield

My assumption on Kat is that Lonni is willing to accept some short term pain now if it leads to additional tools later in the season. She will need those tools if she is relied upon to go through a lineup 3-4 times. And as a few have mentioned she pitched great against bama. We just need a few more hits.

That's what good/great pitchers do...make you swing at bad pitches. lol
Sure.
My point was that Kat is in or borderline around the zone on a lot of her pitches.
Sure Fouts is one of the top pitchers in the country. You will swing at some out of the zone. But, if she knows how to make you swing at a riseball at your eyeballs or a dropball at your ankles then you as a hitter have to make some sort of adjustments throughout the game.

I think its a little early to say Reid wont get her fair share of stikeouts. She reminds me of M. King and may be a bit better just starting out as a freshman.

Catcher stopped hitting mid season last year. She has regressed this year. FSU needs a hitting coach. SS, Catcher and CF are not getting better - are they getting proper coaching. Maybe Coach Ristano's wife is bored at home and can help out.

I think you misunderstood what I wrote, or I just wrote it poorly.

I think Reid IS the dominate strikeout pitcher FSU has sorely missed the last few years. If she can adjust to college softball quickly and become the #1 pitcher, FSU can make a serious run to OKC. If not, then I think this year will be just like last year.

The SS got all the RBIs vs UCLA and her glove makes up for whatever bat she has. The CF hit a hr and had the only run vs Bama. Now the catcher… that’s another story her bat has disappeared. She can obviously hit but is off to very slow start for sure.

I think we will be fine and have a good shot at getting back to Ok. City. It is early in the season so I am not that concerned that some of our players are struggling a bit. Does anyone know what happened to the freshman ss from last year (I can't remember her name). She came in highly rated and did ok, but didn't quite live up to her billing. She is no longer on the team.

I believe you’re thinking of Brooke Blankenship. She transferred to South Carolina.

I hate to say this but based on the body of work so far I would say Reid is going to be delegated to situational opportunities. Not sure why this is - PT is important --So I hope we do not cause a concern.

She still needs a change JMHO - if she gets one she can be a KING

Unless I missed something yesterday she did not play. If she is out for todays double header that may mean they are giving her arm some rest. Resting an arm this early in the season is concerning.

She didn’t. Kat hasn’t played since Wednesday against UNF. I too hope she is okay, with respect to health, as I’m sure we all do.

I have no inside information. That said, Coacha has indicated she is playing everyone, b/c Kat will not be able to do it by herself.
My guess is she starts game 1 and Royalty starts game 2.
Developing 4 or 5 pitchers who can win consistently at this level is important for both this year and next!
