“Plastics.”
Wow, it is everywhere and not always in a good way.

The study started as an accident. Geneticist Patricia Hunt of Washington State University and her team were investigating the reproductive effects of BPA in mice. Housed in BPA-free plastic cages, the test group got doses of BPA through a dropper; the control group didn't.

Everything seemed rosy—until it wasn't.

“Our control data just started to get really wonky,” Hunt says. The differences between it and the test group vanished, and many control mice started showing genetic issues. Though initially confused, the team discovered that some of the plastic caging was damaged and was leaching bisphenol S, or BPS—an alternative to the now infamous plastic component BPA.

Wifey and I are trying to cut back on using single use and especially on plastic water bottles. The amount of crap that accumulates after buying fast food or snacks while on the road is cray cray. It has become so routine to use plastic trash bags and since I have to haul ours to a dumpster site, there aren’t great alternatives. A paper bag can’t deal with wet or stanky stuff well.

The one-time use plastic bottles drive me nuts here in my office. We have one of the old coolers that holds the 5 gallon jugs & dispenses cold or hot water, but most of the younger staff won't touch it. Instead, they'll go through 3 of the little bottles every day.
I realize the single use bottles are convenient if you're travelling in a car, but using them instead of drinking out of a cup our desk is ridiculous.

It's your office. Make a rule.

We had a big water bottle problem at my office and so we stopped buying them, except for client meetings. Replaced with a standup Bevi machine and everyone brings their own glass or bottle. It's less expensive, environmentally friendly, and the flavored water is great.

I have not used a plastic straw in a restaurant for months. 50 million straws are dumped in the ocean EVERY DAY! It is killing the sea life and I am making a conscious effort to cut my use of all plastics. When i am in a store and they ask if I want a bag, i reply, "No thanks. Save a sea turtle." In south Florida they know what I am talking about. A few weeks ago in Tennessee, they looked at me like I was crazy. Sea turtles feed on jelly fish and plastic floating in the water looks like food to them. I no longer want to contribute to their demise.

This company is really doing a great job spreading the word, educating the public and trying to take care of the environment. I love the bracelets and usually have 2 or 3 on every day to remind me to avoid plastic. They also support great environmental causes each month: Polar bears, sea turtles, over fishing, sharks, mangroves, dolphins, whales and more.

The 50 million a day seems insane! Can you offer some more info on that? Is that saying that the plastic equivalent of 50million straws is dumped everyday, or literally 50million straws are being dumped?

Try convincing people not to exclusively use small plastic water bottles on a boat.

Once, I convinced a family to use the boats potable water supply and a Brita filter, but most will bring multiple cases of Zephyrhills On board. The best I can normally do is
Have them buy one case and a few 2.5 gallon jugs to at least cut down.

It’s actually become a big deal recently in yachting. Some of the larger vessels are putting in advance filtration equipment and banning disposable Bottles altogether.

I believe that Belize has a ban set to go into place within a few years. Good stuff, especially for a place so reliant on the ocean.

Mrs. Robinson, you're trying to seduce me. Aren't you?

Hmmm, gonna look into this. Thanks RRR

I believe it's 500MM a day and the source was a nine year old.

When he was 9 years old, Milo Cress had a question: How many plastic straws do Americans use every day?

I grab a one time use water bottle every couple days but then refill it several times a day from our water cooler. Not the greenest solution but better than grabbing a new bottle each time.

I love how quickly airports are adopting water dispensers. Hate when I’m in an airport where the only choice is fill from a nasty old water fountain or buy bottled water for four dollars a pop.

Not sure I buy the 50 million number.........but IMO, the actual number is moot if it's over ~50,000. Whether it's 1 million or 100 million:

Unfortunately, I think we’ve passed the point of no return on saving the planet. Couple hundred years and Wall-E will be seen as the most prescient film of all time.

At the current rate of plastic disposal in the ocean, by the year 2050 there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Think about what that will do to the environment.

Side note: I am not a tree hugger or crazy maniac about the environment. But I have seen sea turtles with plastic in their nose, around their bodies and dead on the beach. It makes me sad that I could be the cause of it. If I can do something, like not using a plastic bag or straw, and save one turtle, I am happy. My avatar is a picture of a loggerhead I took on one of my dives. I love sea life, sharks included.
