In light of all the bad news going around, I figured this would be a good time for a new installment – Troublesome Thursday, in which we catch up with some other FSU players that were kicked off the team and see how they fared.
Preston Parker
FSU trouble: 2006 – arrested for stealing DVD; 2008 – arrested for carrying a concealed weapon; 2009 – arrested for DUI (fell asleep at McD drive-thru)
Drafted: N/A
NFL Teams: 3; Bucs, Saints, NY Giants
NFL Stats: 80 Rec, 1016 yards, 6 TD; 51 kick returns for 1,126 yards
Background: After three strikes at FSU, Parker ended up at U. of N. Alabama. He signed with the Bucs out of free agency and had a bland first season, catching only 4 passes. In year 2, he did well, with 3TDs and almost 600 yards receiving . Nevertheless, He was cut by the Bucs after 2012 and went on to sign a futures contract with the Saints. He he did not make the Saints roster and was cut just before the 2013 season. Out of the league in 2013, he began building Tiki huts to bring in money. But, Parker resuscitated his career after signing a reserve/futures contract with the Giants. He took advantage of his chances when injuries struck the receiving corps.
Parker took over as the primary slot receiver following Victor Cruz's knee injury in 2014. He was a mediocre/solid option as a wide receiver, catching 36 passes for 418 yards and two touchdowns. He also handled punt and kickoff returns capably, average 24.2 yards on kickoff returns and 6.6 on punt returns.
Current: Fighting for roster spot. Despite the bump in playing time last year, Parker finished with just 36 catches. He'll have to fight for a roster spot this offseason and in training camp. The Giants signed free-agent Dwayne Harris to handle returns and be an extra receiver, basically replacing Parker in those roles. Cruz should return. A number of UFA WRs were picked up during the off-season, as well as draft pick Geremy Davis. Parkers hope of making the roster are dwindling, although Parker could provide the Giants insurance in the return game, as well as both inside and outside as a receiver. His future, though, might depend on the comfort level of the organization with some of the younger players he will be competing with.
Greg Reid
FSU Trouble: 2012- dismissed from team for violating team rules
Drafted: N/A
NFL Teams: 1; Rams (practice squad)
NFL Stats: 0
Background: Reid tore his ACL twice after leaving Florida State and transferring to Valdosta state. He was finally picked up by the St. Louis Rams in 2014 and was a fan favorite in the preseason, but was cut just before the season started. He was signed to New Orleans VooDoo practice signed in early 2015 and later signed a one year rookie contract with the Jacksonville Sharks in April 2015.
Current: Starting DB, Jacksonville Sharks. Greg is doing very well in the arena league. He almost leads in all defensive stat categories, which is very impressive considering he missed the first 6 games of the year. He is currently seventh in the arena league in interceptions. Last week, he returned a kickoff 56 yards for a TD, so he still has wheels. Here’s to hoping he gets another shot at the NFL.
Nigel Carr
FSU Trouble: 2010 -charged with two counts of burglary of a car (a felony), felony fraud (attempting to use someone else's identification), property damage and larceny and possession of marijuana.
Drafted: NA
NFL Teams: 1, Ravens
NFL Stats: 0, but was on Superbowl team
Background: Carr was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Ravens out of Alabama State in 2012 and was cut during training camp and then signed to the practice squad. He hasn't played in the NFL since his stint with the Ravens, during which he appeared in no games. Carr chose a good time to become a Raven as Baltimore would eventually make its way to the Super Bowl.
Current: Unknown. Last seen trying out for CFL team Edmonton Eskimos in April of 2015, but it doesn’t appear he made the roster. In May of 2015, he made the news for auctioning his Super Bowl XLVII ring for $43,560.
