Anyone have a system? Any thoughts? Looking for recommendations in Tallahassee.

We were good where we were before. Been in Summerbrooke for a little over 2 years now and the water is noticeably harder out here. I've found 3-4 companies that can do a whole house system. Just looking for any recommendations or feedback before I have any of them out.

You can get a good one online and have it installed by a plummer. Better than Culligan or Rainsoft (way overpriced).

My Culligan is 20 yrs. old..I have pretty hard water and it has held up. I think it was around the $2k range back then.

So if I get one online it looks like there is a pretty good variety. Any recommendation?

Do some serious research before you buy one.

1. Tallahassee water is notoriously excellent quality. My hunch is you don't need it.
2. There are a gazillion BBB reviews of these companies calling them frauds at worst, and highly unnecessary at best.
3. At one point my mother in law was looking at one for something like $6,000-$7,000. Seemed outrageous, especially given point #1. We looked further into point #2, and found that there was so much outrage in FL over them, that the State of Florida had offered an official opinion/consumer advisory (or something like that) warning people to be ultra-careful when considering one of these things. I don't think they even do that for timeshares.

That's all I got.

Doesn't soft water make you feel slimy and soapy when showering, etc? Why would you want that, what is the reasoning for soft water?

If you have hard water, it should protect your pipes and water heater from build up. The one we had included a reverse osmosis system for under the sink so your tap water was safe. less detergent as well.

Don't knock it til you've tried it...

Also @billanole, @TexSkills lives way south of where there were sulphur problems. So do I for that matter.

My water is very hard. I put in a cheap Morton softener close to 10 years ago. I paid about $500 for it and installed it myself. Wasn't a hard install. I put in a few bags of salt every couple months. No problems out of it.

.....

Tallahassee water is very good but also hard. It's in the 160 range.

Before buying online have your water lines checked. My house, built in 2005 by Turner Heritage, has 2 sets of lines so I don't know how I'd install a water softener. I can get to the hot side in the garage but the cold side is separate. Instead of running them side by side like a sane person would do they run the cold and the hot independent.

I ended up getting a dishwasher with a softener built in and our showers look like crap from the hard water because I'm not dealing with having to squeegee the glass every time I use it.

Since no one has mentioned it, I'll throw out this little tidbit. If you have any dietary restrictions about sodium, you might consult with your doctor before installing a salt based water softener. The amount in the water after the mineral/sodium exchange is low, but is still a concern to some people.

That's why most also have an RO filter for drinking water. Of course, then you have the debate of not getting enough minerals in your drinking water.
There is less sodium in a glass of softened water than in a slice of white bread.
