Why do baseball team managers wear a baseball uniform?

I've never seen a manager wear anything but a uniform. Seems pretty silly.

Could you imagine football and basketball coaches doing the same thing?

Willie might still look pretty good in pads, but there are others that bring a smile to my face just thinking about it...Popovich, Saban, Roy Williams, Chip Kelly.

Tree Rollins comes to mind as a basketball player that wore a uniform. Of course he was also a backup center for the Magic in the 90s.

The best? was seeing Ted Turner wear a uniform in the late 70’s I believe- he managed for a day I believe (was a stunt).

Or Saban for that matter. Somehow it’s never really shown, but the Dark Lord is a measly 5’6” reportedly with most saying he’s really 5’4” without lifts in shoe. Even the sports media are careful to not spoil how short he is by using Tom Cruisesque camera tricks to cover it up.

Connie Mack is probably the most famous baseball manager to wear a suit in the dugout. Buck Showalter goes full Bellicheck and does his very best to not be seen in a uniform, going with windbreaker top or winter jacket most of the time.

Was it 6 or 7 years ago when Nolan with the 49ers petitioned to wear a suit on the sidelines and the NFL pitched a fit because Reebok doesn't make suits?

I find it funny when youth baseball coaches are wearing their team's uniform. Dudes are all decked out with wristbands, spikes, you name it. Like they are going to go into the game and make a play

When Terry Francona was manager of the Red Sox, he wore a hoodie and MLB told him he couldn't do that.

Connie Mack was a quality manager and he wore fine suits. He also used to give his players sound thrashings when they couldn't execute. How I miss those days.....

Hey now. A couple of years ago I sealed the deal on 9 out of 13 save opportunities sneaking onto the mound in my then 9 year old's team. Just gotta make sure you shave real close before going to the ball field.

I tried it last year for my 14 year old's team, but they shelled me.

Player managers. Maybe they, like Mike Martin are just hoping to get put into the game.

I always laugh when I see Bob Huggins wearing basically a team issued warm up on the sidelines when every other coach is wearing a suit. That guy doesn’t give a crap anymore.

Coaches attire is all about tradition and it evolved differently in the various sports. As pointed out well in this thread (no pun intended), there’s a lot that no longer makes sense. Wearing a coat and tie in a hot basketball arena is just plain dumb. You used to see more football coaches wear dress shirts and ties but it has largely evolved to team logo apparel that is more climate friendly. The baseball tradition of managers wearing the team uniform is an interesting anachronism that I like.

Great topic for discussion, OP.

The club has to do the manager's laundry too. So baseball managers have less carry on luggage for long road trips which is very appealing over the long spring training and season. This is a big contract negotiation point in lieu of additional salary.
