Today there is extreme caution in saying the least offensive things to people... lets shift to a time when Don Rickles stood on a podium and roasted people- no matter their color, religion or nationality-- and yea he made fun of everyone on these topics. I've seen All in the Family and get it-- acting. But what Don Rickles did was on another level. Ok I'm behind the curve here, I guess most people know this already but all I can say is wow. The laughter from people on the panel and in the audience is good to see, yet I I can't help feeling somewhat "nervous". Below is just one example-- look what happens in the first 1.15 minutes.
I saw another one where he was roasting Ronald Regan. Emmanuel Lewis was the host, handed Rickles the mic, the first thing out of Rickles mouth was "there is the only black guy that won't play basketball". Different times, different world. Its great people laughed at this and found it funny but at times did anyone ever think he crossed the line? My God at some of his comedy......is all I can say.
