Making of Karate Kid 1984

I'm not going to lie, pure 80s cheese but damn if Miyagi breaking down sobbing drunk telling about his wife and unborn child in the Japanese internment camps really was powerful.

[He was nominated for both an Oscar and Golden Globe] for it.

There was a side-plot in Community season 6 where Chang tries out for the part of Danny Laruso in a stage adaptation and he was disappointed to find he'd been cast as Miyagi. Annie gets the part of Danny. Chang then gets berated over and over, scene after scene by the director telling him he needs to do better. At the end of the show we find out that the director doesn't really care who plays Danny, it's Miyagi who's the true star of the film.

tldr: Miyagi is the true star of The Karate Kid, per Community season 6 episode 4

This movie is being discussed on the Mainboard. A few topics:

- In the final match at the end of the movie, it is two to two. Johnny punches Daniel in the face and the ref says "no point". Then Daniel gets into the Preying Mantis stance and proceeds to kick Johnny in the face for the win. Why does Daniel get the point and the win when Johnny didn't? If a punch to the face is illegal, a kick to the face should also be illegal.

- If you're going to complain about that, then you need to go back a few matches and look at Daniel vs. Dutch. We see that match in it's entirety, and here is how the scoring goes:

1) Dutch opens with a sweet double move kick to Daniel's face, Daniel goes down. Point awarded.

2) Dutch charges in on Daniel, Daniel kicks him in the stomach. Point awarded to Daniel. Daniel is declared the winner.

WTF? It's 1-1 now, and we saw the entire match! How does Dutch lose that match at 1-1? That's the biggest plot hole in the movie.

- Frankly I lost all respect for Mr. Miyagi after he let Daniel get back out there and fight following the knee injury. We all know kids just want to compete and push through pain, especially when Daniel had Bitsy Shue pvssy waiting for him if he won. But Mr. Miyagi is supposed to be the adult in the situation, the wise one. It's not worth risking a lifetime of chronic pain or disability due to exacerbating a dangerous injury, he should have pulled Daniel from the competition and let him try again next season.

- In Okinawa he had some help, he learned the secret drum technique. Then in part three he confused bad boy mike barns with kata. Without some sort of deception or one time use move like the crane kick daniel would have lost every fight.

- The fraud that is frontrunner Freddy needs to be addressed.

Befriends Daniel and invites him to the beach
Doesnt help when Johnny kicks Daniels ass
Makes fun of Daniel
Fastforward to tourney, hes cheering for Daniel
Lifts Daniel in celebration after defeating Johnny.

Such pathetic frontrunning.. But i guess thats the culture when it comes to California sports.

- Has this question been addressed yet? Why was Daniel allowed to accept a car from Mr. Miyagi when he was an amateur? Sensei John Kreese was always playing by the rules when it came to training his athletes and what fine sportsmen they were too.

You too much TV.

Classic rebuttal.

To answer the question...it was likely technique in question. Johnny hit him with a straight punch to the face...not a legal technique in most tournaments. Daniel used a clean kick. Big difference.

I think everyone knows Daniel had no shot and the Director purposely tried to blow over the match in hopes people wouldnt catch on.
