Soccer FSU soccer cruises past Rice 3-0

FSU sports information:

The No. 1 Florida State soccer team (3-0-0) used three goals from three freshmen to defeat Rice (2-1-0) 3-0 on Thursday night. FSU begins the season unbeaten through three games for a fifth consecutive season.

The Seminoles were able to establish their dominance early with numerous shots towards goal, recording 20 total shots in the first half. The persistence paid off after Mimi Van Zanten laid a pass off to Ashlyn Puerta who used a deft turn past the defender and unleashed a beautiful strike into the top right corner for the opening goal. Puerta has scored the first goal of the game in her first two career starts.

The next 45 minutes saw more of the same as Van Zanten played a great cross into Lara Dantas, her right-footed effort was going wide before Wrianna Hudson tapped in her first-ever goal at the back post to double the advantage. Dantas put the game to rest with an incredible shot from well past the 18-yard box that was crushed into the back of the net for the third and final goal of the evening.

FSU fired off 39 shots to Rice’s one in the contest and has yet to concede a goal after the opening three games of the season. Florida State has had three different freshmen score in back-to-back games.

Florida State will continue its four-game homestand with a top-20 battle against Georgia next Thursday. First kick is set for 7 p.m. and available to stream on ACC Network Extra.

Soccer FSU hosts Rice on Thursday at 7 p.m. (ACC Network)

Another good win tonight. Had trouble finishing off plays, but that's to be expected with so many players out. There's a lot of young talent on this team - it'll be fun watching them develop.
I was pretty surprised at how good the young players were. We started 3 freshman across the front and I think they all scored. But, what impressed more about them was their on the ball abilities. Finishing is something most teams struggle with, in general, the first 1/3rd of the season. That will get better. For FSU its going to be how fast those young players can get use to playing with each other while we are missing 6 to U-20 world cup.
