Golf Lottie Woad begins play in Curtis Cup

FSU sports information:

Florida State’s Lottie Woad begins play Friday as a member of the Great Britain and Ireland team in the 2024 Curtis Cup Match (Aug. 30-Sept. 1) at the Sunningdale Golf Club in Sunningdale, England. As the World’s No. 1 ranked player in each of the last five weeks of the WAGR rankings, Woad headlines the eight European golfers who will play against the United States in the 43rd edition of the championship.

Woad is one of seven members of the GB&I team who will make their first appearance in the Curtis Cup.

Woad is quite familiar with the Sunningdale Golf Club as it is located just 25 minutes from her family home in Farnham. She has been victorious in two events at Sunningdale – the 2021 Critchley Salver and the 2022 Sunningdale Foursomes -- and considers Sunningdale the favorite course she has played in her junior career. The Sunningdale Foursomes (a nearly 100-year old event) features male and female, and well as professional and amateur golfers all competing for a single trophy.

"I'm very much looking forward to playing in the Curtis Cup,” said Woad. “We've got a strong team, we all get along great, and Sunningdale is a fantastic course, so it's going to be a fun week."

Woad is joined on the GB&I team by Seminole Hall of Famer Karen Stupples, who will serve as an Assistant Captain for the team. Stupples has not only played in the Curtis Cup, but she won the 2004 British Open at the Sunningdale Golf Club. She played for the GB&I team on the Curtis Cup winning team in 1996 in Killarney, Ireland, and the runner-up 1998 team in Minneapolis, Minn.

The Curtis Cup is the most prestigious team trophy for women amateur golfers and contested every two year by teams representing GB&I and the United States. The event was first played in 1932. The format includes three foursomes and three four-ball matches on each of the first two days, and eight singles matches on the final day.

The United States leads the all-time series by a 31-8 margin with three ties during the 42 contested events.

Football Recruiting 2025 FSU DB target Ladarian Clardy moves commitment date to September 21st

2025 DB Ladarian Clardy has moved his commitment date back to September 21st. He has narrowed down his list FSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Washington and UCF. This a player FSU might have gotten a commitment from if they had offered him earlier than they did, May 7th of this year. By that time all the schools left in his recruitment had already extended offers.

My understanding is that FSU had questions about his size, which is the reason they delayed the offer until the spring practice period in May. His film suggests, in my opinion, that he should have been offered sooner. It is also my understanding that because FSU was one of Clardy's dream schools that NIL wouldn't play as much of a factor as it seems to be. Granted, no one knows how big an influence it will play, but a source has told me FSU thought the fact he grew wanting to go to be a Seminole might lessen its influence. Ole Miss looks to be the leader at this point, but the delay might help FSU.

Softball Ruggiero to play for U-18 US Women's national team

FSU sports information:

Florida State freshman Isabella Ruggiero is gaining some valuable national experience this week as she will be competing with the U-18 US Women's National Team at the WBSC World Cup Group C Stage Event in Dallas, Texas. The Red, White and Blue will be looking to punch its ticket to the U-18 WBSC World Cup which will take place next year. The event will take place from Aug. 29-Sept. 2. Team USA will play five games in a round robin format with the top four teams advancing to the playoffs. The four teams will battle for two spots in next year's U-18 WBSC World Cup Finals.

Ruggiero was a top 50 recruit according to Extra Inning Softball and brings another big bat for an explosive Seminole offense. As a senior at the Oxbridge Academy of the Palm Beaches, Ruggiero hit .617 with 16 home runs and 50 RBI. Out of Ruggiero's 37 hits, 26 of them were for extra bases. Ruggiero's 16 home runs led the state of Florida and helped her win the Palm Beach 5A-1A Player of the Year award. Ruggiero also participated in the 2024 Alliance All-Star game in July along with current Seminole Jazzy Francik.
