Softball Louisville takes final game of series vs. FSU

Bummer to see FSU lose like that, but check out the second paragraph

FSU sports information:

The No. 7 Florida State Softball team (42-7, 16-2 ACC) fell to Louisville (24-23, 7-14), 2-0, on Sunday night at Ulmer Stadium in Louisville, Ky.

FSU still sits on top of the ACC standings with three games to play and will need to just one win next weekend at No. 14 Virginia Tech to secure the program's 15th ACC regular season championship and earn the No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament on May 7-10.

Louisville got on the board in the first as they hit a fly ball that was lost in the sun to put a runner on third with one out. The Cards executed a squeeze bunt to put a run on the board. Louisville added an unearned run in the fourth to extend its lead to two.

The Seminoles had a good opportunity to put a run on the board in the second inning as Katie Dack singled, and she beat out the throw to second on a fielder's choice to put runners on first and second with no outs. The Noles were unable to capitalize, stranding a runner on third.

Makenna Reid got the start for the Seminoles and gave up one run on one hit in two innings of work while striking out two. Ashtyn Danley came in and was terrific, going four innings and allowing just two hits while striking out five.

The Seminoles will be back in action next week at No. 14 Virginia Tech. Game one on Friday is set for 6 p.m.

Golf FSU men finish stroke play in third place, will face Cal in quarterfinals on Sunday

FSU sports information:

The No. 10 Florida State men’s golf team moved up six spots on Saturday at the ACC Championship and finished stroke play tied for third place at 6-under, 858. FSU will face California in the quarterfinal starting at 9:20 a.m. ET on Sunday at The Olde Stone Club.

Tyler Weaver led the Seminoles, finishing as the runner-up at 8-under, 208.

Starting the day on the ninth hole, Weaver finished the second-round bogey-free, shooting 69 and in a tie for seventh place at 4-under, 140 to start the day.

Weaver sank three birdies on the front nine to move to a tie for second place at the turn in the third. After a bogey on 13, Weaver hit back-to-back birdies to move on 14 and 15 to claim the outright lead at 8-under.

The Newmarket, England, native went in the clubhouse with the lead, to wait out the rest of the field. Weaver would finish second after his round of 68.

The Seminoles got to work picking up the second round, carding eight birdies on the back nine. FSU closed the round at 1-over, 286 in eighth place.

Luke Clanton shot 69 in the second round and strung together four straight birdies on the front nine in the third. After an Eagle on the 11th hole, Clanton birdied three of the next four holes and matched his 69 in the second round to finish tied for 14th at 3-under, 213.

Jack Bigham made four birdies on the back nine in the third, 1-over, 217 tied for 25th place after adding 72 in the final round.

Carson Brewer started the final round with birdies on three of the first four holes and finished the round even, 72. For the tournament, Brewer tied for 44th at 5-over, 221.

Gray Albright also matched his second-round score of 75 in the third, contributing four birdies. He tied for 53rd at 8-over, 224.

Football FSU Director of Football Recruiting Operations leaving program

A source has told the Osceola this morning that FSU Director of Football Recruiting Operations Maddy McCormack will be leaving the program and that today, Friday, is expected to be her last official day with the program. McCormack has been with the program since the 2022 offseason. She came to FSU from the University of Arizona where she held a similar role.

Baseball Live Updates: No. 4 FSU vs. Jacksonville (Tuesday, 6 p.m.)

After a two-week stint without a home game, the Florida State baseball team is finally back at Dick Howser Stadium Tuesday night.

The No. 4 Seminoles (23-4, 7-2 in ACC) are back at home for the second of three scheduled games this season vs. Jacksonville (16-11, 6-3 in A-Sun) at 6 p.m., with a broadcast on ACC Network Extra and 100.7 FM in Tallahassee. FSU won the first game 9-6 at JU back on Feb. 26. The Dolphins enter this game at FSU on a four-game winning streak, taking last Tuesday's game vs. UCF 3-2 and then sweeping Queens University.

In the homecoming for FSU, sophomore LHP Hudson Rowan (7.88 ERA over 16.0 career innings) will make his first career start for the Seminoles vs. Jacksonville after his first 21 career appearances came out of the bullpen. JU will start Aaron Zenus (3.38 ERA over 16 innings), who allowed one run on three hits over 2.1 innings in the first game against FSU this season.

I'll have updates once things get rolling as FSU looks to win its second straight midweek game and improve to 6-2 in midweek games this season.

Baseball Live Updates: No. 9 FSU at Florida (Tuesday, 7 p.m. on ESPN2)

After a rough few days and the first series loss of the season over the weekend, the Florida State baseball team will look to bounce back Tuesday night.

That chance will come in a road game with plenty of stakes vs. rival Florida. The No. 9 Seminoles (25-6, 8-4 in ACC) take on Florida (20-14, 1-11 in SEC) at Condron Family Ballpark Tuesday at 7 p.m. (ESPN2) in the rubber match of the midweek rivalry series. The Gators won the first game of the series 7-2 in Tallahassee four weeks ago and the Seminoles evened the series two weeks ago with an 8-4 win on Alex Lodise's walk-off grand slam.

The Seminoles will start sophomore RHP Peyton Prescott (5.09 ERA over 17.2 innings) for the rivalry matchup. However, he's expected to only be an opener of sorts as he threw twice, on Friday and Sunday, in the weekend series vs. Wake Forest. Sophomore LHP Brady Louck is someone who could pitch multiple innings vs. the Gators and Joe Charles/Maison Martinez are also expected to be available.

UF is starting freshman RHP Jackson Barberi (5.12 ERA over 19.1 innings) vs. the Seminoles. He pitched in the first FSU-UF game this season, allowing one run on one hit over three innings. However, he's had some struggles since and has allowed eight extra-base hits this season (five doubles, three home runs).

FSU is giving freshman infielder Jace Estes his first career start at third base Tuesday night and James Hankerson Jr. will make another start at DH with Jaxson West sidelined.

Golf PGSF FedEx Cup Week 17 The Zurich Classic of New Orleans

shane-rory-belt-trophy.jpg

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is the lone team event on the PGA TOUR schedule and once again features plenty of the game’s best playing in a unique format.
This is the eighth year the Zurich Classic has been played as a team event. Each duo starts the week playing Four-ball (best ball) before switching to Foursomes (alternate shot) for the second round. Saturday’s third round will once again be Four-ball before returning to Foursomes for the final round.
Up and down the field you’ll find Ryder Cup heroes, Presidents Cup pairs, countrymen, fan favorites and even two sets of twin brothers. Given the format and the teams, it’s set to be a special week.

With the RBC Heritage now in the rear-view mirror, it’s also a valuable time to earn key FedExCup points as we inch closer to the Truist Championship, as golfers are jockeying for position in the Aon Next 10 and Aon Swing 5 to earn a spot in the field in Philadelphia.
Here’s everything else you need to know as the TOUR returns to New Orleans.
FIELD NOTES: Fresh off his Masters victory – a major triumph that completed the career grand slam – Rory McIlroy will once again team up with friend-of-20-years Shane Lowry to defend their title in New Orleans. Last year marked McIlroy’s debut at the event, with the thought to play together stemming from a … celebratory … lunch between the two Ryder Cup teammates. McIlroy has won three times already this season on the PGA TOUR while Lowry has had a steady 2025 campaign with six top 25s in nine starts, including a runner up to McIlroy at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. … Collin Morikawa is the other top-10 ranked golfer in the field in New Orleans and will be teaming up with Kurt Kitayama after the duo finished T23 a year ago. Morikawa has three top-10 finishes so far this season while Kitayama has never missed the cut in New Orleans. … There are three sets of brothers teeing it up, including two sets of twins: Yannik and Jeremy Paul along with Rasmus and Nicolai Højgaard. Alex and Matt Fitzpatrick (who finished T11 last year) is the other sibling duo, … There are always plenty of fun pairings this week in New Orleans including countrymen (Canada’s Nick Taylor/Adam Hadwin, France’s Matthieu Pavon/Victor Perez, South Africa’s Erik van Rooyen/Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Japan’s Ryo Hisatsune/Takumi Kanaya), neighbors (J.T. Poston/Keith Mitchell, Greyson Sigg/Kevin Kisner, Camilo Villegas/Luke Donald), same-college alums (Adam Schenk/Tyler Duncan, Quade Cummins/Chris Gotterup, Zac Blair/Patrick Fishburn), or just long-time pals (Joel Dahmen/Harry Higgs, Nick Hardy/Davis Riley – who won in 2023, Mark Hubbard/Ryan Brehm). … Garrick Higgo and Ryan Fox will be paired together as Higgo looks to continue his momentum from his return to the PGA TOUR winner’s circle last week at the Corales Puntacana Championship. … After his playoff loss to Justin Thomas at the RBC Heritage, Andrew Novak is right back in action alongside Ben Griffin. Novak finished T23 in 2024.
SIGNATURE EVENT STORYLINES: The next Signature Event on the PGA TOUR schedule is the Truist Championship. … The top 10 FedExCup points earners through the THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson will earn spots in the Truist Championship via the Aon Next 10. Maverick McNealy leads the Aon Next 10 list after Sunday at the RBC Heritage with Novak, who fell in a playoff to Justin Thomas at Harbour Town, sitting No. 4. … The top five FedExCup points earners in the Corales Puntacana Championship, Zurich Classic of New Orleans and THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson will earn spots in the Truist Championship via the Aon Swing 5. With his win in Punta Cana, Higgo sits atop the Aon Swing 5 after one event. … There was a five-way tie for second at the Puntacana Resort with Alejandro Tosti, Keith Mitchell, Jeremy Paul, Joel Dahmen and former PGA TOUR University No. 1 Michael Thorbjornsen all earning 95 points towards the Aon Swing 5 standings.
COMCAST BUSINESS TOUR TOP 10 UPDATES: With his win at the Signature Event RBC Heritage, Justin Thomas jumps back inside the TOUR TOP 10 standings from No. 11 all the way up to No. 2. Thomas’ victory at Hilton Head was his fifth top 10 of the season, matching Corey Conners for the lead on TOUR so far in 2025. … McNealy also jumped into the TOUR TOP 10, from No. 14 to No. 8 after finishing T3 at the RBC Heritage. … Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley both moved up one spot in the standings from No. 4 to No. 3 and No. 5 to No. 4, respectively. … Sepp Straka, Ludvig Åberg, Morikawa and J.J. Spaun round out the rest of the TOUR TOP 10. … With his T3 at Harbour Town, Brian Harman made a tidy leap from No. 22 to No. 12 and is just 70 points outside the TOUR TOP 10.
FEDEXCUP: Winners receives 400 FedExCup points.
COURSE: TPC Louisiana, par 72, 7,425 yards. Water hazards are featured prominently on the course, but the Pete Dye design (which featured Steve Elkington/Kelly Gibson as consultants) is one of the TOUR’s most scoreable layouts. It stretches over 250 acres of wetlands, features 100 bunkers and is located just 15 minutes from bustling downtown New Orleans.
72-HOLE RECORD: 258, Nick Hardy/Davis Riley (2023)
ALTERNATE SHOT RECORD: 63, Hadwin/Taylor (Round 4, 2023), Patrick Cantlay/Xander Schauffele (Round 2, 2023), Chad Ramey/Martin Trainer (Round 4, 2024)
BEST BALL RECORD: 59, Cantlay/Schauffele (Round 1, 2022).
LAST TIME: Long-time pals and Ryder Cup teammates McIlroy and Lowry defeated Ramey and Trainer in a playoff to top the field in New Orleans last year. It was McIlroy’s tournament debut. Ramey and Trainer shot a tournament-record tying 63 in the Foursomes format in the final round to zip 25 spots up the leaderboard after making five birdies in a row after making the turn. They went 2-under for their final three holes to finish at 25-under 263 and then waited as McIlroy and Lowry went birdie-bogey-birdie to end up tied. Trainer pushed a 6-foot par attempt on the first playoff hole to the right, and the team of McIlroy/Lowry, who had known each other for about 20 years, was the winner. It was McIlroy’s 25th PGA TOUR title and Lowry’s third. The team of Ryan Brehm and Mark Hubbard nearly made it into the playoff as well, with Brehm’s birdie try on the 72nd hole hanging on the right-side lip. Patrick Fishburn and Zac Blair were tied for the lead heading to the 71st hole but made double bogey to end up in a four-way tie for fourth.

Good Luck to everyone this week

Bakers Dozen

FSU sits at 8 commitments at this time. Their class rank is #18th in the RIVALS.COM team rankings. When you look at their class the one thing missing is a quarterback commitment. It will be interesting to see who they bring in as FSU has to sign a high school signal caller in the class of 2026. Here are the top 13 players FSU should go after.

1) QB - Landon Duckworth - Jackson HS (Jackson, AL) - 6-3, 190 - FSU needs a big-time quarterback and Duckworth sits at the top of the list. He needs to get back on campus. With such a major need for Duckworth, I have the Seminoles in the game for his services until he pulls the trigger for another program.

2) CB - Chauncey Kennon - Booker (Sarasota, FL) - 6-0, 180 - There are two ways to recruit. The Ohio State, USC, Texas way or how Clemson has done it for over two decades now under Dabo Sweeney. The Dabo way is land a big time QB, WR, OT, DT, DE and CB. Land Duckworth and Kennon and 2/6 of the job is done. Kennon is one of if not the top corners in the state of Florida.

3) DE - Jake Kreul - IMG Academy (Bradenton, FL) - 6-3, 230 - You may be able to find guys who are more physically impressive at defensive end. I doubt you can find many better. Jake is the real deal. He has a super quick first step. FSU needs a premier pass rusher and Jake fits the bill. I would argue he is the No. 1 rated player in the state of Florida this year.

4) DT - Kendall Guervil - Fort Myers- (Fort Myers, FL) - 6-5, 310 - Kendall is a major priority for FSU. They need a big-time DT and Kendall may be the guy. He comes from a pro-FSU school. Odell Haggins, while not the DL coach anymore, still has ties to Fort Myers. Kendall is exactly what FSU needs on the inside of the DL.

5) LB - Duyon Forkpa - IMG Academy (Bradenton, FL) - 6-0, 225 - Forkpa is one of the more impressive-looking linebackers in Florida. He has the size and speed to play linebacker. He is an every down player. He reminds me of a more athletic version of Kalen Deloach. He likes FSU and they are in the ball game. Can't ask for much more.

6) OL - Lamar Brown - University Lab (Baton Rouge, LA) - 6-4, 290 - Brown would be higher on the list if not for him being from Louisiana. FSU is in the mix, but landing kids out of Baton Rouge is not easy. Brown can play tackle or guard at the next level.

7) WR - Brandon Bennett - American Heritage (Plantation, FL) - 6-0, 170 - If the reports are true out of spring practice, then SPEED is the No. 1 priority FSU needs at WR. Bennett is one of if not the fastest receivers on their board. You have to feel with Pat Surtain ties to Heritage, FSU would have a great shot at landing Bennett.

8) TE - Julius Miles - Freeport - (Freeport, FL) - 6-7, 210 - Miles gives you size at tight end. He is big and can run. He is more like a bigger receiver at this time. He is going to have to learn to improve as a blocker. We expect him to be heavily recruited this spring and a commitment could come by the summer.

9) Lasiah Jackson - Lee County - (Leesburg, GA) - 6-2, 190 - Jackson has been on campus. He fits what FSU is looking for in a safety prospect. He can play in the box and act like another linebacker. You can drop him into coverage and cover a receiver or tight end. He gives you the size and length on the back end of the defense.

10) OT - Johnnie Jones - Berkeley Prep (Tampa, FL) - 6-6, 300 - FSU needs to start landing some true tackle prospects. Berkeley Prep has not been kind to FSU over the years. That does not mean much as Jones needs to be a priority. He has size and length, two things missing from FSU's roster at the tackle spot.

11) S - Kaiden Hall - Milton - (Milton, FL) - 6-3, 190 - Hall is another DB that fits the bill. FSU wants to get bigger and longer in the secondary. Guys like Hall fit the 3-3-5 scheme that FSU is going to run. He has the athletic ability to play in coverage. He also has the size to play inside the box and help in run support.

12) DE - Kamron Wilson - Miami Southridge - (Miami, FL) - 6-5, 210 - He recently committed to Syracuse. I still expect FSU to recruit him as DE is a position they need to recruit well. He is one of the few quality defensive ends that is actually interested in them this cycle.

13) TE - Evan Jacobson - Waukee HS (Waukee, IA) - 6-7, 220 - If you are a tight end and Iowa has offered you, then go after that kid hard. Evan was at FSU's summer camp last year. He is going to take another visit this spring. He would be a big-time get for FSU.

Just missed the cut
TE-Brock Harris -Pine View - Saint George-Utah
OT-Courtney Heard-East Coweta

Baseball Notes, updates: FSU hosts Wake (Saturday at 4 p.m., ACC Network Extra)

A warm day at Howser as Florida State baseball plays host to Wake Forest in game 2 of the series. First pitch will be just after 4 p.m. on Saturday on ACC Network Extra.

Max Williams gave FSU (25-4) up a walk-off 5-4 win over Wake on Friday night.

LHP Joey Volini (7-0, 1.25 ERA) will be on the mound for FSU. In 43.1 innings, he has 63 strikeouts and nine walks. Opposing batters are hitting just .173 against him.

RHP Logan Lunceford (4-2, 4.36 ERA) will be on the mound for Wake. In 33 innings, he has 58 strikeouts and 16 walks.

We'll have starting lineups below in the thread once they're available and chat with us during the game.

Baseball Live Updates: No. 4 FSU vs. Wake Forest

For the first time this season, the Florida State baseball team will play a rubber match at Dick Howser Stadium Sunday afternoon.

After winning 5-4 on a Max Williams walk-off Friday night and losing 12-0 Saturday afternoon, the No. 4 Seminoles (25-5, 8-3 in ACC) take on Wake Forest (22-10, 8-6) Sunday at 1 p.m. (ACC Network Extra) with the series on the line.

As FSU looks to win its eighth straight weekend series to begin the 2025 season, it turns to sophomore LHP Wes Mendes (2.83 ERA over 35 innings) on the mound. Mendes was great in his first five home starts at FSU this season, allowing two earned runs with 43 strikeouts to three walks. However, he's struggled more in his last two starts on the road, allowing nine earned runs over 7.2 innings with more walks (10) than strikeouts (9). Could a return to Dick Howser help him rediscover his early-season form?

Wake Forest will start sophomore RHP Blake Morningstar (2.29 ERA over 35.1 innings). He's got a .189 batting average against this season with far more strikeouts (44) than walks (11).

Ranking the Commitments -Class of 2026

FSU has 9 commitments for the class of 2026. If you look at what they need 1-QB, 1-2 RB, 2-3 WR, 1 TE, 3-4 OL, 2 DE, 2 DT, 2-3 LB, 2 S and 2 CB. If they reach those numbers you are around 21-22 players for the 2026 class.

QB-0
RB-1 (Amari Thomas - Blountstown)
WR-2 (Efrem White - Vero Beach / Darryon Williams - Tampa Plant)
TE-O
OL-3-4 (Xavier Payne - Jones-OT-OG / Michael Ionata - Calvary Christian)

DE-O
DT-O
LB-2-3 (Kayron Maycock - Miami Central)
S-2 (Tedarius Hughes - Miami Northwestern / Darryl Bell - Miami Lakes Barbara Goleman)
CB-2 (Sean Johnson - Severn, Md., Archbishop Spalding)

Ranking the commits

1) RB-Amari Thomas: Blountstown HS-5'11-190 -
Think Thomas is severely underrated as a prospect. Turn on is film and there is very little wasted motion. He has some CJ Spiller to his game. He has both the speed and quickness to make the big plays. You watch him cut and it is very fluid for Thomas. He is not easy to bring down. He runs through tackles. I feel that he is only going to get better. Thomas should be ranked a higher 4 star prospect.

2) WR-Darryon Williams-Tampa Plant-5'11-170- Darryon is probably the best overall athlete in FSU's class. He is very elusive as a receiver. Turn on his film and this kid makes plays against every team he faces. He dominated against Saint Thomas Aquinas. He has the ability to stretch the field. He is going to make the big play. He has very good ball skills. You can put him on special teams and Darryon will probably make plays there as well. He is someone that needs the ball in his hands.

3) LB-Kayron Maycock-Miami Central-6'1-200-Big on versatility. Maycock was a safety but may outgrow the position. When you play so many spread offenses you need backers who can run. Maycock can flat out run. He is physical and can come up and help in the run game. He fills the gaps. He is someone that is going to play with instincts. He is also very good in coverage. Another player that is underrated. He is a legit 4 star prospect.

4) OT-OG Xavier Payne-Orlando Jones-6'7-320- Payne plays tackle at Jones High School. At the Rivals.com camp he was playing tackle. He has the size that FSU needs on the outside. He can possibly play right tackle but we project him more as a guard. He has some physicality. What he lacks is great lateral quickness. Speed rushers off the edge could give him some problems.

5) S-Darryl Bell-Goleman HS-6'0-190 -Bell is the first big time prospect to come out of Goleman. He has played running back and safety. He is an in the box safety at the next level. He is similar to a Nate Andrews. He tackles well. Bell is someone that you has played some running back so he understands what opposing teams are trying to do on offense. He is a very good player but has a limited upside.

6) DB-Tedarius Hughes: Miami Northwestern- 6'2-170- Hughes has some length in the secondary. He is someone that plays with range. You can line him up on the hash and let him cover half the field. He needs to become more consistent from week to week. He is more of a free safety than strong. Hughes has to get bigger and stronger.

7) DB-Sean Johnson: Archbishop Spalding -6'1-175- Johnson fits the mold of corners FSU is trying to sign. He is bigger (6'1) and gives you some length. He is more of a boundary corner. Not sure you put him in space or have him cover a receiver on a crossing route. He lacks ideal speed and quickness to play man coverage. He tackles alright. You would like for him to have quicker feet. Good player but he needs some work.

8) OL-Michael Ionata-Calvary Christian-6'5-300-I stress over and over again that FSU lacks OT with some size and length. Ionata is someone that fits the bill. He has some length. He is a big kid. He moves pretty well. You would like for him to be a little more fluid in his lower body. He plays a little high. He has decent technique but that is something that the coaches at FSU will want to work on.

9) WR-Efrem White-Vero Beach-6'2-200-White has the top ranking of any prospect in FSU class. White has played QB, WR and DB in college. I would not be surprised to see White not end up in FSU class. We will see what happens this spring but he needs to show something on the field.

Final Thoughts: I judge classes based on filling needs. FSU NEEDS a big time QB. PERIOD. I know there are rumors of Duckworth leaning to Ole Miss....Don't care. FSU needs to land Duckworth as he has some ELITE skills to play QB at the next level. Signing a QB to sign one is not an option this year. I also feel FSU needs to land a #1 WR, a top tackle, a top rated DE, DT and CB. We will see what happens as there is a long ways to go.

Baseball Live Updates: No. 4 FSU vs. Wake Forest (Friday, 8 p.m.)

The biggest weekend of the 2025 Florida State baseball season to date has arrived.

The No. 4 Seminoles (24-4, 7-2 in ACC) kick off a series vs. visiting Wake Forest (21-9, 7-5 in ACC) Friday night at 8 p.m on ACC Network. The Demon Deacons, who took the series over the Seminoles last year in Winston-Salem, were ranked in the top 15 nationally until this week after dropping a home series vs. Virginia Tech last weekend. They enter this weekend having lost five of their last six ACC games.

Friday's series opener is a sellout and the Marching Chiefs will be in attendance, playing live during the game down the right-field line.

FSU will turn to junior LHP ace Jamie Arnold (3-1, 3.07 ERA) and hope he can right the ship vs. the Deacs after he's been a bit sloppy the last two weekends at Miami and at Notre Dame. After striking out 32 batters and walking just four over his first four starts of the season, he's issued more walks (7) than racked up strikeouts (6) in his last two starts.

Wake Forest will start junior RHP Luke Schmolke (3-0, 2.14 ERA). This will be his first career start for the Demon Deacons, but he's been a very effective bullpen arm thiss season, allowing just 12 hits over 21.0 innings with 30 strikeouts to nine walks.
