On this day in FSU history, the Noles defeated the Auburn Tigers for the first time in school history in Bobby Bowden's second season as the head coach in 1977. The closest the Noles had ever come to beating them previously was in 1962 in a game played to a 14-14 tie. It was also the first win over an SEC team since 1972.
The Noles had never beaten the Tigers before in any of the previous 10 meetings, holding a 0-9-1 record. Bobby Bowden was 4-4 against the Tigers in his career and the Noles are now 5-4 against them during the Bowden and Jimbo Fisher eras.
In front of the 6th largest crowd in FSU history with 42,464 in attendance, RB Larry Key set a new single game rushing record at 170 yards on 25 carries. Key also had two touchdown runs in the game, one from 15 yards out and another late in the game from 25 yards out.
Coach Bowden later said of 5'9 180 lb runningback: "There is no doubt about it, Larry Key is one of the toughest little men I've ever seen. He is really hard to bring down once he gets going. It was great for Larry to get that record."
Larry Key was elected into the FSU Hall of Fame in 1984
On defense, Ron Simmons had himself a day. He recorded 13 total tackles, 10 solo, 3 tackles for loss totaling 16 yards in losses and recovered a fumble. Jimmy Heggins and Mike Kincaid also recovered fumbles for the Noles. Walter Carter recorded 2 tackles for loss with a 14 yard total in losses. Heggins would later return to FSU as a coach.

Aaron Carter, Scott Warren and Bobby Jackson each grabbed interceptions and Warren added a forced fumble. Carter was elected into the FSU Hall of Fame in 2014 and still holds the school record for career tackles with 512 and single season with 181. Warren was a 3-time 1st team All-American elected into the FSU Hall of Fame in 1997. Jackson was elected in 1993.

Some may remember Carter from the very first Sod Talk last year before The Citadel game.
Can't find any film from the game, but I'm sure there's one out there. Only thing I can find right now is the halftime show by the band:
