The Noles have not had a terribly great history on this day, certainly not as successful as we've been on 10/2 and mostly thanks to one team.

We'll start with the bad news. On this day, the Noles have lost a total of 4 games, the last of which was to Boston College in Bobby Bowden's last year in an extremely close game which included a rare miss by Dustin Hopkins.

The other 3 losses, unfortunately all came at the hands of the Hurricanes; two of which in Tallahassee. The heartbreaking part though, all three games were lost by a combined 5 points. We have probably never played any other team as close and still have them cost us so much than Miami. It makes you wonder how much our histories may be different if overtime rules had been different in some of those contests over the years.

In 1959 on this date, we lost to them by 6-7 after we decided not to go for the tie late in the game.

In 1987 on this date, another 1-point loss came around in a 25-26 score after the Noles scored with 42 seconds remaining and we once again failed the 2-point conversion. At one point in the game, we had a 19-3 lead.

Finally, in 1992 on this date, after a Dan Mowry blocked FG and two failed FG attempts, we lost 16-19 in what would become to be known as Wide Right II.

So, not that my opinion matters or anything, but if it were up to me I'd be sure to do whatever I could to make sure we don't play them on this date anymore.

On to the good news. For all the bad that has happened on this date, there have been some good as well.

We have shutout two teams on this date, Louisville in 1953 and New Mexico State in 1964.

Against Louisville in 1953, Tom Nugent's Noles beat a Johnny Unitas led Cardinals team 59-0 in Tallahassee. The following year on 10/2 in 1954, Johnny Unitas returned for his senior year and his first game was against FSU. The Noles won 47-6 to give a combined score of 106-6 against the Cardinals in the junior and senior years Unitas was there.

On this day in 1964, Bill Peterson's squad defeated New Mexico Sate 36-0 in front of a record crowd of over 25K in the newly expanded Doak Campbell Stadium. It was the 3rd shutout victory in a row for the Noles to start the season. The Noles would finish 9-1-1 that year behind a great defense that recorded 4 shutouts and held 7 of the 11 teams faced to 7 or less points and none scored over 20 that year.

On this day in 1981, the Noles went on the road to "The Horseshoe" and defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes for the first time in school history. The Buckeyes went into the game 3-0 and ranked #7 in the country.

The Noles and Ohio State faced off in '81, '82 & '98 and so far the Buckeyes have never been able to defeat the Noles. Would have loved to have added to that list last year.

On this day in 1998, Sebastian Janikowski tied Bill Capece's record of 5 FG's in a game helping us defeat the Maryland Terrapins on the road. The victory improved the Noles to 9-0 all time against Maryland. Although Jano tied the record with a long of 48, he missed one from 47 which could have helped him break the record.

Finally, in 2002 on this date, Florida State faced Clemson for a Thursday night game, something I know many have inquired about in recent years. FSU cancelled classes for Thursday and Friday in anticipation of campus traffic issues. The Noles won 48-31 led by Greg Jones running for 165 yards and 3 touchdowns.
