C.J. Hanson IOL, Holy Cross

2 time all Patriot League Guard rose up draft boards with an impressive athletic showing at the combine. Great size for a guard, can move down and play center so upside with ability to play multiple positions.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Round 6

Overview

Durable three-year starting guard with a captain's "C" added to his jersey in 2023. Hanson plays with terrific technique and gets into Phase 1 of his pass and run blocks with good balance and positioning. His hand placement as a run blocker is above average, while his pass punch is well-timed and accurate. Hanson does the right things, but he simply lacks the play strength needed to match up with NFL defensive tackles. Hanson could be a potential late-round or free-agent target for a team looking to add muscle and mass during a year on the practice squad.

Strengths

  • Throws punch hands with firmness and right down the chute.
  • Hands and feet in harmony throughout his protection reps.
  • Good eyes and hand twitch to pass and receive against twists.
  • Body control and footwork to adjust and land as pulling guard.
  • Is technically sound in run game and understands his landmarks.

Weaknesses

  • Below-average play strength in upper and lower body.
  • Struggled to displace or neutralize interior targets versus Boston College.
  • Lacks agility for sudden recovery when beaten.
  • Feet can lag in mirroring edge-to-edge movement.

Cody Schrader RB, Missouri.

Baltimore must rebuild its running back depth behind newly-acquired Derrick Henry following the departures of both Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins to John Harbaugh's little bro in L.A. A former walk-on, Schrader is a self-starter who led the SEC in rushing yards and TD's in his final season while excelling against big-time opponents.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Round 6

Overview

Ornery and competitive, Schrader’s story arc reads like a Hollywood movie. The sixth-year senior dominated at Truman State before walking on at Missouri and showing he could shine against SEC competition. He’s a stocky short-strider lacking ideal explosiveness but is still a successful outside-zone back due to his vision, decisiveness and fearlessness through the line. He’s a volume back more likely to wear a defense down rather than gash them with chunk runs and is a capable pass protector against the blitz. Teams need to weigh the heavy production against average physical tools, but he appears to have a decent shot of becoming an RB2/3 with three-down ability.

Strengths

  • Team captain with extreme competitive fire.
  • Strong performances against Georgia, LSU, Tennessee and Ohio State.
  • Outstanding processor getting from read to read as outside-zone runner.
  • Can press deep into the line of scrimmage, creating easier cutbacks.
  • Runs with desired level of decisiveness and toughness downhill.
  • Blocks with awareness, toughness and technique protecting his passer.

Weaknesses

  • Tight hips with tight, short strides.
  • Could struggle breaking arm tackles near the line as a pro.
  • Lacks post-cut acceleration, allowing defenses to rally.
  • Ducks and plows prematurely at times instead of searching for more.
  • Must have throws put right on him.

USATSI_21435796-1600x900.webp

Ty'Ron Hopper LB, Missouri

Fast and athletic who can cover RBs and TEs on vertical routes. He showed he became a smarter player later in his college career when he decided to leave uf for Missouri. Needs to bulk up, but there is a roster spot for Hopper

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Round 5

Overview

An off-ball linebacker with length, speed and agility, Hopper is lacking in field vision and instincts. He can be a step late to diagnose play design and has moments where he looks lost in coverage. Hopper has sideline-to-sideline range and plenty of physicality to hit what needs to be hit. There are holes in his game that can be exploited, but he has traits and should get a chance as an NFL backup with special teams value.

Strengths

  • Long-limbed with above-average explosiveness.
  • Speed to trigger downhill and disrupt play design.
  • Can attack linemen with force or punch and play around them.
  • Flies in to make plays as a striker.
  • Agility and twitch to bounce late and find cutting running backs.
  • Can work past blitz pickup and threaten the pocket.

Weaknesses

  • Plays through a straw with limited field vision.
  • Slow to key play development and stay ahead of blockers.
  • Lacks decisiveness and takes substandard angles to the ball.
  • Hard hitter but needs to improve tackle security.
  • Looked lost at times with coverage responsibilities.

With the 230th pick the Vikings select Bub Means WR, Pittsburgh.

The Vikes don't have much in the receiver room besides Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison, following the exit of K.J. Osborn. Here Minnesota selects a big pass-catcher with a long wingspan and impressive testing numbers to compete for a roster spot.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Rounds 6-7

Overview

Big receiver with build-up speed who should be a natural fit for teams employing a layers-based passing scheme. For his size, Means is surprisingly adept at slipping press and shows an ability to create separation on over routes and go routes once he hits top speed. He can win contested throws but gives too many away when he's not imposing his size on the coverage. Means could struggle with a route tree requiring him to gear up and down getting in and out of breaks. The production has been fairly average, but his ability to lengthen and widen out the field could make him a Day 3 pick with a shot to become an NFL backup.

Strengths

  • Good height with big frame and excellent wingspan.
  • Suddenness to elude press and take early lead.
  • Drops head and hits accelerator to extend downfield separation.
  • Uses catch radius to stab throws over the heads of corners.
  • Has speed to prolong the run after the catch on West Coast routes.
  • Played much more confidently over second half of the 2023 season.

Weaknesses

  • Needs additional steps to stop momentum on comebacks.
  • Occasionally takes foot off the gas and doesn't finish the route.
  • Sits and waits on zone throws, allowing coverage to bang catches loose.
  • Average feel for putting the cornerback on his hip and keeping him there.
  • Could use better effort to sustain his run blocks.

With the 231st pick the Patriots select:

USATSI_21705910-1600x900.jpg

Jordan Whittington WR, Texas

A tough, smart, physical receiver who has great hands. Lacks the elite athletic traits of his fellow Texas WRs which led to him being overshadowed. His versatility ( took snaps at RB) will help him find a roster spot, plus he is tailored made for the new special teams roles.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Priority free agent

Overview

A big slot target with excellent toughness, Whittington lacks the explosiveness typically associated with competing in the league. His value comes with his consistency and willingness to do any dirty work necessary. He can be found making tough catches in traffic or getting after opponents as a run blocker. While he shows attention to detail as a route runner, he’s neither fast nor sudden, which is likely to force him into tight work cubicles against NFL coverages. Whittington’s intangibles work in his favor but making a roster will be a challenge.

Strengths

  • Big frame and plays to his size.
  • Displays a solid feel for route structure and how to sell it.
  • Runs up near defender’s toes before breaking off the route.
  • Toughness to play over the middle.
  • Great teammate willing to do the dirty work to get the job done.

Weaknesses

  • Tends to be a little too stiff-legged into sharp-breaking routes.
  • Acceleration and top-end speed are unimpressive.
  • Just five career touchdowns on 141 career catches.
  • Below-average burst in exiting from route break.

Go Blue Michigan Football GIF by Michigan Athletics

Trente Jones OL, Michigan.

Minnesota adds a versatile and talented... albeit not extremely experienced...lineman for depth and competition. Jones never started on the loaded Wolverine o-line, but he can play anywhere up front.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Round 7/PFA

Overview

Jones has limited starts and relatively few offensive snaps by NFL offensive line standards but he’s put outstanding flashes on tape. He lacks the size and length teams look for at tackle or guard, but he’s talented enough to play at either spot. He loses reps due to poor positioning or overstepping his landmarks, but is rarely beaten by an opponent's quickness or power. Jones is highly athletic, with the ability to bend and drive opponents off the spot or stall the rush with his punch and cinch. He has the talent to play in all blocking schemes, but there might be concerns about why he failed to establish himself as a full-time starter at Michigan.

Strengths

  • Loose-limbed with outstanding movement talent.
  • Explodes hips and hands into first contact.
  • Generates terrific lower-body push on down blocks and double-teams.
  • Smooth climber on work-up blocks to the linebacker.
  • Uses crisp, sudden hands with his pass punch.
  • Possesses tremendous core power to stop rush plans.

Weaknesses

  • Below-average size and length as a guard or tackle.
  • Made just 13 starts during collegiate career.
  • Excitable off the snap, causing oversets and missed landmarks.
  • Can get better at working hips/feet into position to seal block post-contact.
  • Overreaction to rush moves leaves him open to counters

Jowon Briggs DL, Cincinnati

Strong ( 39 reps at pro day ) versatile dline guy who can play 1 or 3. Late round pick as lacks ideal arm length and size.

Written by B/R NFL Scout Matt Holder
OVERALL
Jowon Briggs turned some heads at the Big 12 pro day by weighing over 15 pounds heavier than his roster weight and putting up impressive testing numbers, highlighted by a 5.0-second 40-yard dash and 39 reps on the bench press. He's also a versatile defensive lineman who lined up at just about every technique in college.

That will help Briggs land on an NFL team's radar since he projects as a backup who can play multiple positions. However, he does lack NFL length, which shows up on tape.
Briggs also blends in more than he stands out, which is reflected by his rather underwhelming numbers this past season.

GRADE: 5.4 (Backup/UDFA with Roster Potential — UDFA)

Isaiah Davis RB, South Dakota State.

Following Zack Moss' departure Indy could stand to enhance its running back depth behind Jonathan Taylor. In 2023 the powerful first-team FCS All-American Davis led the subdivision in rushing for its eventual national champs.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst

Rounds 6-7
NFL Comparison
Jordan Howard

Overview

Brinks-truck runner with the size and power to collide through first contact and create additional yards. Davis is a naturally physical player due to his size but also possesses the bend and footwork to create alternate pathways when needed. He will need to ramp up his decisiveness and hit holes more quickly to thrive through the step up in competition. Davis has limited speed to widen NFL defenses and will need to run with more downhill focus. He has the potential to play all three downs and should be in consideration in the middle rounds.

Strengths

  • Well-built frame includes flexible lower body and nimble feet.
  • Patient and capable following his blocks as inside or outside runner.
  • Feet chop through reads and contact to keep runs from stalling out.
  • Runs with very heavy pads to break tackles and carry bodies with him.
  • Adequate footwork to re-route the run according to traffic with relative success.
  • Has the size, strength and pass-catching background for third-down reps.

Weaknesses

  • Needs to run with more decisive burst at the point of entry.
  • Tendency to bounce runs wide will work against him as a pro.
  • Average shake to elude big hitters from second level.
  • Could have issues squeezing through tighter run creases.
  • Hands are fairly average when catching throws outside his frame.

JD Bertrand LB, Notre Dame

JD has all the intangibles you want as a leader and locker-room guy who also has good ball instincts but lacks the athleticism to be a starter.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Round 6

Overview

Team leader with above-average production who carries good lean mass on his frame. Bertrand's stats are appealing, and he plays with a decent nose for the football, but his lack of speed and short-area quickness could be a major concern as teams project his ability to keep up with NFL skill players on the move. He needs to get much better at taking on or slipping blocks and finding a way to improve his angles and positioning to become a more consistent tackler. Bertrand could get a look on Day 3, but special teams might need to be his calling card.

Strengths

  • Three-year starter and two-time team captain.
  • Production has been like clockwork over the last three years.
  • Sifts through inside-zone wash blocks and steadies for the cutback tackle.
  • Preemptively attacks block with downhill charge to muddy the run lane.
  • Provides immediate opportunity to join as core special teams player.

Weaknesses

  • Below-average range as NFL linebacker and playmaker.
  • Angles to ball-carriers make his job tougher.
  • Fails to close out and body up as pursuit tackler, leaving him lunging.
  • Not very effective at punching and getting rid of the block.
  • Missing scrape quickness to stay ahead of the play.

With the 236th pick the Jaguars select Joshua Karty K, Stanford.

The Jags have brought in Joey Slye to perform their place-kicking duties. Only problem is Slye ranked near the bottom of the league in both PAT and FG percentage for Washington last season. Karty is the top kicker available and frankly will be expected to win the job.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Rounds 4-5

Overview

After struggling in 2021, Karty kicked with impressive accuracy and consistency over the last two years. He hits the ball with repeatable process and repeatable ball flight from 40-plus yards out, and he never seemed to get into a mental funk. Karty has a strong enough leg to make field goals from 54 to 56 yards without having to drive them low, and his kickoff leg will take the return game completely out of the equation if teams want. He has middle-round draft value and could become a longtime NFL kicker.

Strengths

  • Possesses deep range of 56-59 yards on tape.
  • Creates momentum into his strikes and generally gains big lift.
  • Made 91.1 percent of his field goals over the last two seasons.
  • Handles kickoffs with the same leg strength.
  • Completed slick onside kick against Sacramento State.

Weaknesses

  • Must be careful not to overcorrect to the opposite post on kicks from the hash.
  • Failed to make his wind adjustments on 51-yard misses against Arizona.

With the 237th pick, the Bengals select:

1802521348.jpg

Tanner McLachlan TE, Arizona

Guy that plays hard, fiesty football. The effort he gives covers up the lack of measurables teams look for in TEs. Needs to work on strength and technique in contested catches.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Rounds 4-5

Overview

McLachlan is a slightly challenging evaluation, as his measurables and traits don't really match the intangibles and effort he puts on tape. He plays with the spirit of an in-line tight end and flashes what it takes to execute blocks, but he's missing the mass and play strength for one to confidently project him as a pro blocker at this point. While McLachlan has short arms and average speed, he still finds ways to go get the football outside his frame and does whatever it takes to add yards after catch. There are boxes that go unchecked, but his "whatever it takes" mentality is the kind of intangible that often turns prospects into pros.

Strengths

  • Plays with a competitive spirit that jumps off the tape.
  • Active hand work after contact to extend his block sustain.
  • Puts in the work to get backside cut-offs and climb to the linebacker.
  • Finished catches through explosive strikes.
  • Flashes build-up speed on the move and after the catch.
  • Hurdles, pulls, spins and stiff-arms to find the extra yards after the catch.

Weaknesses

  • Narrow through his lower body, with short arms for his size.
  • Needs to move hands inside when getting into blocks.
  • Lacks ideal body control and efficient footwork as run blocker.
  • Routes lose momentum coming out of turns.
  • Needs to create better "rebound" positioning on contested catches.

With the 238th pick the Texans select Amin Dankwah OT, Howard.

Houston rolls the dice on this hulking Canadian product to see what can be developed out of him. It seems if Dankwah has a future in the league, it will be at right tackle. (See analysis below.)

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Round 7/PFA

Overview

Decorated left tackle with extremely rare size, mass and length. Dankwah is a human wall with the ability to grind and drive opponents off their turf once he's centered up and has his legs driving. He moves with adequate initial quickness but will struggle to redirect his weight to make blocks on the move or to recover against quick inside rush counters. Dankwah is too tall to play guard and might not have the lateral quickness to protect the passer at an acceptable level. However, size and power matter to NFL teams, and there is enough on tape for a general manager to invest a late-round pick in him.

Strengths

  • Enormous human being with arms like two big tree limbs.
  • Upper- and lower-body movements are quicker than expected.
  • Highly effective moving opponents off their spot on angle blocks.
  • Active hands can keep defenders at the end of his punch.
  • Creates wide net to corral edge attacks, keeping them in his clutches.

Weaknesses

  • Lack of lower-body bend turns base blocks into wrestling matches.
  • Predictable change-of-direction issues in space as a big man.
  • Effectiveness diminishes greatly when blocking in space.
  • Below-average redirect quickness to mirror inside rush moves.
  • High center of gravity limits ability to steady his base versus contact

Giovanni Manu OT, British Columbia

The Saints take a shot on a project from Tonga who is a monster. 6'7" 350lbs who ran a 4.96 at his pro day which generated interest. Raw as a player but measurables are undeniable.

The Packers were one of several teams on hand for Manu’s pro day workout where he ran the 40-yard dash in 5.06 seconds and hit 33.5″ in the vertical leap. Based on his testing from the pro day, Manu’s Relative Athletic Score would be 8.83 out of 10.0.
A native of Tonga, Manu played in 39 games over six seasons (redshirt in 2018, 2020 season cancelled). He started 33 games at left tackle and six at left guard. Manu was a second team All-Canadian pick in both 2022 and 2023. Manu is 23 years old.
A potential Day 3 pick or priority free agent, Manu is likely viewed as a developmental prospect who has the physical size and athleticism to play at the NFL level.

With the 240th pick the Panthers select:

Illinois Football GIF by Fighting Illini Athletics

Keith Randolph Jr. DL, Illinois.

The Panthers grab a run-stuffer who will provide depth behind all three line spots...at least to begin with. Randolph isn't the dynamic athlete his ex-Illni teammate and earlier draftee Johnny Newton is, but he's big and strong and also fundamentally sound.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Rounds 6-7

Overview

An interior defender with good strength and pad level, Randolph lacks a true positional play quality where he can plant his flag on the next level. He's not twitchy off the snap or with his field movements, but Randolph has managed to stack up tackles at a relatively high rate during his tenure at Illinois. He's consistently playing as low as or lower than his opponents and can neutralize a base block, but he's not a classic stack-and-shed defender. He could factor as a rotational defender but won't offer much help as a pass rusher. Randolph has backup talent as a potential Day 3 pick.

Strengths

  • Team captain who's an active tackler for his position.
  • Uses strong outside hand to post and mirror lateral blockers with positioning.
  • Handled himself well in his matchup with Penn State LT Olumuyiwa Fashanu.
  • Able to get skinny and slip into gaps as a slanting rusher.
  • Capable arm-over allows access around pass protection.

Weaknesses

  • Lacks burst and has trouble creating early advantages with quickness.
  • Below-average upper-body twitch for sudden block sheds.
  • Can be widened off the mark when setting the edge.
  • Lacks short-area athleticism and plays with slightly labored change of direction.
  • Doesn't have the foot quickness or skill set coveted for interior rushers in the NFL

Owens simply hasn't played enough football for one to determine whether or not his apparent mental busts and issues with positioning in the run game will subside with more experience. He's big, physical and rangy with a temperament for striking near the line of scrimmage. He's not ready to handle high safety responsibilities but can be a tough out when he's in position to contest a throw. His A+ special teams potential could buy him time as he continues his schooling as a hybrid linebacker/safety with a higher floor and lower ceiling.

Strengths

  • Coveted blend of physical traits and top-end speed.
  • Steps into run fits with the demeanor of a linebacker.
  • Rangy and long, creating additional tackle opportunities.
  • Uses size and speed to smother downfield routes in man.
  • Potential to align over big slots and pass-catching tight ends.
  • Excellent on cover teams, with ability to stand out as a pro.

Weaknesses

  • Made just 12 career starts, with fewer than 1,000 defensive snaps.
  • Lack of experience shows up with apparent mental busts.
  • Understanding of zone assignments seems to get murky.
  • Not enough feel for leverage and pursuit angles in run support.
  • Inconsistent at coming to balance and proper tackle positioning.

With the 242nd pick the Titans select Kalen DeLoach LB, Florida State.

The Titans take a speedy aggressive playmaker who should be able to contribute immediately on passing downs and on special teams. DeLoach isn't big but he has a high motor and is a dangerous blitzer. His pass coverage skills could use some work...a flyer with upside.

Draft Projection
Round 7/PFA

Overview

Undersized linebacker who needs a team willing to work around his size deficiencies and find a way to emphasize his playmaking mentality. DeLoach is built like a strong safety and zooms around the line of scrimmage, darting into gaps and disrupting play designs, but he'll have issues holding up when blockers find him. He's an athletic blitzer with excellent body control in pursuit. While he's physically capable in man coverage, there are a few too many mental busts in the passing game. His size will be a concern, but he has run-and-hit talent and might offer enough sub-package potential to make a roster and eventually see the field beyond special teams.

Strengths

  • Possesses playmaking traits and a nose for the football.
  • Gap shooter with twitchy downhill trigger for disruptions.
  • Rangy in pursuit with above-average closing burst to the ball.
  • Open-field athleticism showed up with his passes defensed.
  • Impressive blitzer with the fluidity to zero in and finish the sack.
  • Better tackle strength than expected for his size.

Weaknesses

  • Lack of size and length create issues with position fit.
  • Will avoid blockers to the detriment of his run fit at times.
  • Struggles to work quickly off of first contact.
  • Too many busts locating his coverage responsibilities

Tyler Owens S, Texas Tech

Solid player, likes to hit and could be a great special teamer with new format. Plus you know he is dialed in as he has no time to believe if space exists.

As long as he can tackle in space he'll have a shot. 🤓

Brady Latham OG/C , Arkansas

Good size OG who has played a lot of snaps in the SEC. Team leader who is good at run blocking, a depth piece to protect Jameis after he overtakes for Massage Envys worst customer.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Priority free agent

Overview

Team leader with loads of football in his background. Latham is a scrappy run blocker who stays connected to blocks with grip strength more than core strength. He works well with his center or tackle on double-teams and can strain to neutralize as a base blocker. He ends up on the ground too often and can be pulled off balance due to his leaning. He plays with enough anchor and technique to hang on in pass protection but is slow reacting to twists and movements across his face. Latham is an average talent with below-average traits who has a shot at fighting for a back-end roster spot as a guard.

Strengths

  • Team captain with 47 starting assignments under his belt.
  • Fits up double-teams with good pop and churning feet.
  • Sinks strong hands into opponents and is tough to shed.
  • Flips hips into positioning to help seal off the run lane.
  • Effective hop-and-anchor technique versus power rush.

Weaknesses

  • Plays with very ordinary body control.
  • Climb-up blocks lack timing to tag the linebacker.
  • Ends up on the ground way more than he should.
  • Lunging prevents fluid reactive movements to mirror counters.
  • Loses track of the A-gap next to him in pass pro.

USATSI_22395220.jpg

LaDarius Henderson G, Michigan

Packers add another depth piece to compete to protect what may be the 3rd straight all pro QB.
Henderson likely moves inside to improve chances of making team with the bonus of versatility.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Priority free agent

Overview

Offensive tackle with decent athletic traits and above-average physical traits, but his game tape simply doesn't show enough consistency. Henderson's size and length will check boxes, but his play against the likes of Iowa, Alabama and opponents at the Senior Bowl left a lot to be desired. He needs to improve his anchor strength in protection, but he appears to have enough lower-body drive to generate some movement in the run game. Ultimately, an inordinate amount of mental mistakes and a lack of instincts will be hard for offensive line coaches to overlook.

Strengths

  • Possesses a 7-foot-1 wingspan and huge, strong hands.
  • Slides out to greet edge rushers with good foot quickness.
  • Initial quickness to reach and seal 3-techniques in zone.
  • Gets into run-blocking fits with adequate pad level and leverage.
  • Adequate lower-body push when clearing out down blocks.

Weaknesses

  • Struggled with protection duties in College Football Playoff and Senior Bowl.
  • Below-average anchor to withstand a hearty bull rush.
  • Fails to recognize twists and games developing around him.
  • Movement on combo blocks and in space are segmented.
  • Lacking desired contact balance to sustain run blocks as pro.

With the 246th pick the Bucs select Bayron Matos OT, Dominican Republic.

Another IPP prospect comes off the board as Tampa hopes they've found a seventh-round gem here. The 6'9" Matos is a former hoops player at USF but has never played football. A 4.88-40 is among testing numbers ridiculous for a man of his size. (Click the link below and read for details.)

With the 247th pick the Texans select:

Steele Chambers LB, Ohio ST
This pick was phoned in by the owners wife. It was difficult to understand her Chardonnay dialect, but something about the television show Dynasty.
anyways
Steele has the talent to make the roster, has played in big games and should excel at special teams.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Rounds 6-7

Overview

Chambers is a running back-turned-linebacker with three years of starting experience at his new position. His background seems to have spawned a natural feel for where the runner is headed, and he often ends up in or near that lane. He plays with decisiveness and quick lateral scrape in an attempt to stay ahead of the blocking scheme. He needs to get stronger and improve his block take-on technique, and there is still room for improvement against wide zone running plays. He's not a burner but is rangy enough for full-field pursuit and coverage duties. The physical traits are average, but his nose for the football puts him in line for a backup role with upward mobility.

Strengths

  • Will fit his gap and spill action wide or set an edge to contain.
  • Pounces on top of combo blocker to short-circuit the climb up.
  • Fairly decisive in his read and reaction to early play development.
  • Has a talent for wiggling away from blockers in tight quarters.
  • Athletic tackler with ability to find entry points from challenging angles.
  • Possesses coverage potential in man or zone as a pro.

Weaknesses

  • Needs improved upper-body strength to take on blocks.
  • Can get thrown out of the club if blocker sinks into him.
  • Drifts downhill without a plan and gets trapped behind bodies.
  • Can be conned by counters and misdirection.
  • Short arms could create issues for him as wrap-up finisher in the league.

With the 248th pick the Bills select Jase McClellan RB, Alabama.

Buffalo waited until its final pick of the draft to finally address its shaky running back depth. McClellan has the skills to win a roster spot on a team that doesn't have much behind James Cook.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Round 7/PFA

Overview

Steady three-down running back with the size and skill set that should create a roster opportunity for him. McClellan lacks explosiveness but gets it done with above-average vision and know-how. He's quick to process his lane choice and smooth getting from cut to cut. He has good-not-great burst and appears to be better suited for gap and inside-zone runs. He runs with excellent pad level and loose hips, creating impressive contact balance to extend runs through contact. The numbers don't shine in the passing game, but he's very capable of handling all aspects of third-down football. He's an instinctive runner with three-down talent who could end up outplaying his draft slotting on the right team.

Strengths

  • Gets through the line with low pads and good knee bend.
  • Processes lane development, making instinctive adjustments on the move.
  • Above-average wiggle to push would-be tackler off-kilter.
  • Good feel for spatial relationships to maintain distance from arm tacklers.
  • Sees incoming contact and steadies to absorb and continue the run.
  • Has route-running footwork, soft hands and elusiveness after the catch.
  • Will chop down or stick a forceful shoulder into blitzers.

Weaknesses

  • Lacks desired explosiveness early in the run.
  • Average foot quickness when making lateral cuts.
  • Modest top-end speed to stretch the run wide or vertical.
  • Can get too cute looking for ideal points of entry up front.
  • Needs to place greater priority on staying squarely in front of rushers

Isaiah Williams WR, Illinois

Slot receiver who switched from QB to wr. He is quick and explosive but needs a lot of work on technique and learn how to play the position.

By Lance Zierlein
NFL Analyst
Draft Projection
Rounds 6-7

Overview

Three-year starter and two-time team captain who stair-stepped his production and impact in each season. Williams' size limits his contested-catch success, but he’s still a tough player. He’s an NFL slot but has aligned around the field at Illinois. He has the makings of becoming an above-average route runner with an expanded route tree, but his 4.63-second 40-yard dash time at the NFL Scouting Combine could hurt his stock despite solid testing in other areas. His limited catch radius requires a more accurate quarterback, but he plays with talent and determination once the ball is in his hands. He can be asked to work across all areas of the field and has both gadget and punt return ability. Williams is competitive and versatile but must prove he can play fast to become a WR4 as a Day 3 pick.

Strengths

  • Excellent competitiveness and plays bigger than his size.
  • Has footwork and change of direction for trickier routes.
  • Manipulates defender’s leverage and runs routes with speed variance.
  • Slippery with the ball in his hand after the catch and on punt returns.
  • Former quarterback with run/pass potential on gadget plays.

Weaknesses

  • Routes lack crisp cuts and attention to detail at times.
  • Frequently has potential catches jarred loose by defender’s impact.
  • Struggles to bring in off-frame throws with heat on them.
  • Has had three muffed punts over the last two seasons.
