Today is a special day. It marks the 70th anniversary of when pen was put to paper to create the Florida State University. Following a 80-7 on May 9th in the HOR, at 9:50am on May 15th, Governor Millard Caldwell signed the bill making Florida State College for Women co-educational and changing the name to Florida State University.
After the bill was signed, John Howell Patterson III was the first male to enroll at the newly formed Florida State University.

Mr. Patterson was the first student to register for the TBUF program (Tallahassee Branch of the University of Florida), 1946-47. He was one of 507 men enrolled at Florida State College for Women in 1946.
Patterson just recently passed away on May 6, 2017.
