All thoughts On Covid

Lived through the suck that is having COVID. It's no fun. I don't mind the whole mask thing in the same way I don't mind the no shirt, no shoes, no service policy.

Here's my thoughts:

- If you haven't been exposed yet...you will be. Virus gonna virus if you know what I mean! So have a plan - know where you'll test and DON'T ignore the symptoms and try and explain it away - figure out if you are a candidate for monoclonal antibody and know who is going to prescribe it for you and where you will get your infusion - time is of the essence!!

To take your post a step further, take care of yourself. Quit smoking. Get exercise. Try and keep your weight and blood pressure within reason. These things can make a big difference when your body is asked to fight illness.

CDC says 25% of Americans have been infected (I think it is higher than that)
18% of infected have symptoms

For most, your immune system will deal with it fine. For older folks or those that have chronic diseases, and a small select few of unlucky healthy people it will be a vicious virus.

I have seen this thing bounce off of people my age (early 50’s) and knock people much younger on their asses. My sister in law who is 39 is currently on a ventilator. One of my best friend’s wives couldn’t get out of bed for 2 weeks. (She is 32). Healthy people prior. A retired Navy seal I know told me the other day it was like the flu (x10). He still hasn’t fully recovered. Add those stories to the dozen or so people that I know of who weren’t hit nearly as hard and the virus appears to me unpredictable at best.

Same here. Not quite to that extent but a good friend of mine (36) developed pneumonia and a couple others said they didn’t feel right for weeks. To those who don’t want to get the vaccine because of “they don’t know what it could do to you long term” I ask if you know what COVID can do to you long term? I’ll take my chances with a vaccine as opposed to a disease that could really mess up my lungs long term as well as cardiac related issues and this “brain fog” I’ve read enough about to be horrified by.

I still struggle with the fact that other than the March / April period of 2020, respiratory deaths have tacked below the 5-year average for the remainder of the time.

maybe i have been lucky but through 11 months i only personally know three people who have tested positive. One each in their 20’s, 30’s, and 40’s. No symptoms for either beyond loss of smell.

I will get the vaccine when I am able. But, the stats for people who have long term issues after Covid infection as well as the stats for who gets hospitalized are extremely low for the under 65 age groups. I don't fear the virus. The vaccine is to get to crowd immunity so the level of circulating virus is so low as to not be a significant risk for the vulnerable going forward and so we can stop the mitigating behavior which is causing lots of issues.

I understand that, my point is people who say they aren’t getting the vaccine because of long term concerns don’t make much sense. We also don’t know a ton about the long term effects of the actual virus.

historically, viral pandemics with person to person infection delivery similar to influenza rarely prolong more than 12-18 months at the pandemic level. with respect to the sudden, significant drop in new cases, yes i'm jaded by the date that began on especially in light of the fact that were are currently in the absolute peak of flu season in any normal year.

That would make sense because we have been as a group social distancing which would decrease the spread of all respiratory viruses.

Welp, I think my sense of smell and maybe taste have degraded. Headed out Sunday to get tested.
I'm fine otherwise. Oh well, we shall see...

dude...get tested today if you can and check into monoclonal antibody infusions if you're a candidate - the virus doesn't take days off!!

Agree. If the thought that “even one case is too many” prevails then who knows

Some folks are truly scared. Maybe they have family histories or issues that justify the fear. Whatever works for each person is fine with me, of course. I’m just personally ready to resume something resembling normalcy.

I wonder what the parameters will be for the CDC etc to recommend easing the current guidelines of masks/ distancing etc?
Oh man, it’s going to be SO painful. Some of these folks are going to suggest we wear masks forever. I’m not a COVID denier by any means, but this is the super bowl for these public health/infectious disease folks. Fauci has become an actual celebrity over this. I’m not saying they’re making stuff up, but I don’t take their opinions as gospel either because all they’re concerned about is one aspect of the pandemic. They’re not looking at it from an economy or mental health perspective.

Drama and chaos are big sellers. The media LOVES to pour gas on fires. The 24/7 news cycle requires A TON of "content," even if the media needs to manufacture some of it.

Fauci has spent his career trying to be a celebrity. He has now succeeded beyond his wildest belief. And he has admitted recently, that some of the things he says have no scientific backing, just things he thinks we should do.

Did you get tested??
Yes, just got the results 30 mins ago. Negative. Whew!
I guess my lousy smell and taste is just me getting old.
I think I got dehydrated while fixing my frozen pipe outside on Monday and Tuesday.
Thanks for asking. By the way, Seminole 72 and his wife got it and have recovered.
Now I can reschedule my vaccination.

Just scheduled my first shot. Saturday at TCU stadium. Ugh. Was hoping I could go to Texas Motor Speedway. Much closer and easier to get to.

Getting my second shot tomorrow at Zero Dark Thirty because of massive traffic jams. I want to be on full cylinder for the Spring game weekend.

got my second shot late January. Still wear a mask because most places ask you to wear one and to make people feel more comfortable.

I fell like laminating my vaccine card and wearing it around my neck like a backstage pass. I'm with the band. :p

BTW, the second shot put me on my butt for about 24 hours. Same for most folks in my dept. Almost as bad as the Shingrix shot.

Moderna or Pfizer?

Got the first Moderna shot yesterday. Feels like someone punched me in the arm, otherwise I feel fine.
I've heard the second Moderna shot has more reaction than the Pfizer although the nurse I was talking to while waiting said the second Pfizer shot made her feel like crap for a day.

I get my second jab of Pfizer on March 9. I've taken the next two days off just in case it knocks me down.
