Not one mention about this show in the LR it seems. I could've missed it. I've watched the first three episodes. Visually, it's better than the script. But so far, it's not bad. Character development seems to be the first few episodes. Lots of nipples, and one dangling johnson.

Tried watching late one night but quickly fell asleep on first episode. I awoke to a gunfight in a hotel and was completely confused. Like GNT about one show at a time is all I can handle so will come back to this show after finishing up season two of Travelers.

Actually just finished the season this morning. I think it gets better as it goes along. Some good twists thrown in along the way, and what I think was a pretty good story.

Frantically trying to finish House of Cards so I can get in to this. My simpleton mind can't get fully involved in more than one show at a time.
My wife does this to me. We'll be binge watching a show...... and suddenly we'll be watching a different show. WTH! She just did it with Altered Carbon with Imposters. Fortunately they are different, so I wasn't counting characters on my fingers and toes.

Thought it was very good. Wasn't in love with the ending but I can live with it. The guy's come far since the Killing.

BONUS: Game of Throne's like nudity

Ah, GOT... that's on my list of things to eventually tackle, but good gawd that's an investment of time. Luckily, the Rangers will be crap this year, so I'll have 162 days of time to invest. Download some episodes for the flights to TPA and back from JAX... and I should be able to get a full season in for each trip from Dallas to St. Augustine. Seems do-able to catch up by the fall season.

Side note... are direct messages only for Mods on this site?

It’s supposedly the second most expensive show and it REALLY looks like it. The sets and FX are on par with blockbuster movies.

But other than the nudity and sex that’s all the really positive things I have to say. The acting is pretty good especially the hotel AI and the rich guy, but the lead is pretty uninspiring other than being ripped.

The real problem is the story is just ok. It’s not terrible but it’s not great either. And that’s speaking as a Sci-fi and fantasy fan.

Lead in Altered Carbon is Joel Kinnaman from the Killing and Suicide Squad. Pretty poor actor, IMO. I understand he's not American, but most times he plays an American cliche.

Will have to check out Altered Carbon at some point before West World and Silicon Valley start back up.

He was pretty good in 'Run All Night', IMO..........my Mom has said 'Altered Carbon' is really good, I might have to check it out.

I'm really getting into 'Counterpart', it's been hard telling the two realities apart sometimes, but it's starting to get really good.

I will say for excellent Sci-fi on Netflix, everyone should check out the USS Callister episode of Black Mirror Season Three. It’s got FANTASTIC acting and a really interesting story. Just when you think you know where the story is going it throws you for a loop.

Joel Kinnaman's character on The Killing is one of my TV favorites, and I've go no problem with him in this role.

I watched about 4-5 episodes before having my "do you really give a sh-- about this actually?" and having to admit I really didn't. Even with shows I basically have no fundamental problem with...sometimes eventually I just don't CARE what happens anymore.

The 4K HDR picture quality is fantastic, among the best that's been offered on streaming. And I like the world they've built...now that we've seen so many dozens of dystopian futures, I thought the universe they created was fairly fresh and interesting, with a lot of neat touches and ideas.

But while I like the details and general premise, I think if you strip it away to just the narrative and the characters, it's kind of weak. Especially everything surrounding the detective...her character development, relationships, work situation...it's all extremely clunky and the dialogue tin-eared. If you took away all the bells and whistles that entire character's plot line would be too corny to make it on TV.

Ultimately, it's not my genre of choice, so I'll cede final judgement to someone who thrives on that stuff, but it wasn't good enough to hold me. I think once again, ten episodes was way too much. I think if they'd dialed down to a nice tight propulsive 6-episode arc they'd have a lot better piece of work. Godless and The Tick, those shows massively benefited from a shorter run. I enjoyed both quite a bit, but I think I don't know if I'd have pushed through 12 episodes of either. Sometimes there just isn't enough there there.

Sometimes (maybe mostly) you just don't need 10 or 12 episodes to tell a story cleanly, and I'm a little surprised we're not seeing more limited episode series, especially on the streaming platforms. There's frequently too much filler, and you'd think the buyers would start pushing back on numbers of episodes for cost reasons.

Three episodes in and dont feel all that inspired to keep with it. Maybe it will change when I run out of better things to watch.

I've been digging these books for a few years now. The show gets better as it goes with a nice twist near the end. II enjoyed it....like a modern day blade runner, but with cool twist with the transferable consciousness.

Since this draws Blade Runner comparisons, at the risk of hijacking the thread, I'll say you'd be hard pressed to find someone less enthralled with the original Blade Runner than myself, and yet I enjoyed the heck out of Blade Runner 2049 to my pleasant surprise.

Blade Runner 1 was a good movie with a cult like following, a la Mad Max. Blade Runner 2 was more a visual cornucopia of delights. I liked both.

Have you seen the Director's cut for the original Blade Runner? There's no voice over, a few extra scenes, and has a different ending. It's far better than what was released to the theater, etc.

And yes, 2049 was very good and I can't wait for the next one.

I'm sure I've seen at least a couple of the versions at this point. I've given it a go at least three times. At the end of the day, the story doesn't really interest me, what happens is underwhelming, and I have a hard time staying awake throughout it. I'm not saying it's bad, this is one of a few I'm perfectly willing to put it on me and not millions of fans being wrong, but it just doesn't hit the mark for me, really in any way. But I'm also not really a sci fi guy, whether space fantasy or hard sci fi, so I can't find my way into everything in the genre. I absolutely love many sci fi movies (2001, Moon come to mind) but many "classics" just don't click at all with me.

I want to say there is something that makes me specifically intolerant to "slowness" in sci fi, because my most common top of mind complaint about them is "so freaking boring". But 2001 is about the slowest movie in existence, and I love it to pieces, so not sure what it is.

Disagree. He was my favorite character in The Killing. Think he did a great job in Altered Carbon as well. Thought it was solid from beginning to end.
But this is coming from someone who really likes the Shannara Chronicles. Lol.

I liked Shannara Chronicles, it was a huge shame they killed any chance they had of it finding an audience by moving it around channels. Honestly, as a story...the story on Shannara was far more interesting to me than Altered Carbon. But Shannara’s budget was probably one hundredth the budget of Altered Carbon.

Where was the loop?

When it starts you expect it to be a relatively simple story of a downtrodden nerd who leads a double life learning something good in his virtual life and rising to either become a hero, win the girl or otherwise learn about pride and assertiveness.
That expectation is subverted when he ends up in fact being the villain and it’s the virtual world “evil boss” that becomes the hero.
And it’s the nerd girl who is captured who learns the “standard story moral” and grows.

I definitely understand what you are saying, and I found it interesting as well. I was just expecting something right at the very end that was a major surprise i.e. they think they have him beaten, but he ends up coming out on top.

OMG - if you can stomach the Shannara Chronicles, we have to discount everything you said before that...(says the guy who secretly watches it when nobody is around to see me watching such a terrible show) - it is like the one of the housewives shows for fantasy nerds...those of us who grew up on the books are like, this is awful, but I can't stop watching.

Im binge watching Shameless and looking for my next one to watch. I never thought I would get tired of seeing a good looking girl naked, but damn Fiona keep your pants on. What a trainwreck!

I did a binge on GOT over Christmas and it took about 3 weeks.

Has any one seen Dark on Netflix. It's actually a pretty engaging little mini-series if you can get past the language dubbing.

I thought Dark was outstanding. I too have problems with dubbing, so left it with German dialog and English captions. Get a much better sense of the drama and emotion even if you don't know the language.

Enjoyed Altered carbon a lot, at least until the season finale. I felt a little let down by the resolution of many plotlines.

I didn't even know that was an option! I will go that route. The english dubbing is distracting. Better to read the subtitles most times.

Thanks for the tip

Yep, I loved Dark. The dubbing was terrible, got to go with the subtitles. I'd say Dark was my favorite show of the year I think, and the best thing I've seen on Netflix, maybe ever. I posted a thread on it when it was released.

Normally, when I'm watching TV at night, I'm surfing Twitter and other things on my phone...impossible with Dark given the subtitles and the extremely complicated plot...and it was good enough for me to put my phone down for the duration, which is pretty remarkable.

And I'll say this if you try Dark...right from the very beginning, focus hard on who everyone is, and what their relationships are. They show a lot of family pictures in the first episode or two...there's a reason for it. And assume every character is important...if there is a name, make sure you get it.

As I said before, one of the things that makes it harder is being a German show...everyone is white. If it had been an American show, a multicultural cast would have made it a lot easier to follow.

But it's absolutely worth the effort in my opinion.

Or, have a wife who does all of those things, and you can ask her a lot of questions ;)

Just want to drop this here, for people who follow the TV threads. I've previously recommended Fortitude season one on Amazon frequently and enthusiastically, which I still stand by.

Just finished Season 2...holy crap. I probably can't stand by that one...while Season 1 was pretty high on the gore meter, Season 2 is absolute extreme gore at points...including a scene that's probably right up there with the most disturbing things ever on a TV show. If you've had the misfortune of seeing it, you know what I'm talking about...real mondo extreme horror stuff.

There's still a lot of good stuff in the show, I like the acting and the characters, but in addition to kind of crossing the line horror wise, it's really all over the place in terms of narrative, and turns up the craziness considerably, to the point of really being pretty impossible to keep up with. Not what I would consider a really strong follow up season.

Ok just finished Altered Carbon. I liked it, but the main actor is really really bad. Could have been better, but I thought it was entertaining.
