Joel Kinnaman's character on The Killing is one of my TV favorites, and I've go no problem with him in this role.
I watched about 4-5 episodes before having my "do you really give a sh-- about this actually?" and having to admit I really didn't. Even with shows I basically have no fundamental problem with...sometimes eventually I just don't CARE what happens anymore.
The 4K HDR picture quality is fantastic, among the best that's been offered on streaming. And I like the world they've built...now that we've seen so many dozens of dystopian futures, I thought the universe they created was fairly fresh and interesting, with a lot of neat touches and ideas.
But while I like the details and general premise, I think if you strip it away to just the narrative and the characters, it's kind of weak. Especially everything surrounding the detective...her character development, relationships, work situation...it's all extremely clunky and the dialogue tin-eared. If you took away all the bells and whistles that entire character's plot line would be too corny to make it on TV.
Ultimately, it's not my genre of choice, so I'll cede final judgement to someone who thrives on that stuff, but it wasn't good enough to hold me. I think once again, ten episodes was way too much. I think if they'd dialed down to a nice tight propulsive 6-episode arc they'd have a lot better piece of work. Godless and The Tick, those shows massively benefited from a shorter run. I enjoyed both quite a bit, but I think I don't know if I'd have pushed through 12 episodes of either. Sometimes there just isn't enough there there.
Sometimes (maybe mostly) you just don't need 10 or 12 episodes to tell a story cleanly, and I'm a little surprised we're not seeing more limited episode series, especially on the streaming platforms. There's frequently too much filler, and you'd think the buyers would start pushing back on numbers of episodes for cost reasons.
