Crazy looking picture. I hope people are ok, but that looks bad!

A friend of mine recently became Assistant Commissioner of Washington DOT. I believe rail is under his direction. Heckuva way to start a new job.

Looks bad. Wonder the cause, mechanical failure, infrastructure issue.

I've always wondered how resistant the trains are to people putting things on the tracks. We used to do coins, but wonder about larger objects. Bigger than a penny, but smaller than a car. Seems the weight of the train would make it fairly stable.

We’re talking about Amtrak. I’m putting my chips on ‘delayed maintenance’.

It was the inaugural trip for that route, so there were a lot of VIPs and train enthusiasts on it.

Was the first day of that route on a new line. So not likely the problem.

I do not believe the track or the engine/cars involved are ‘new’.
A ‘new line’ doesn’t mean what it might sound like. A ‘new line’ is basically a particular manifest taking a certain route at a certain time when one of those three things is new.

Not ruling out sabotage, but most likely something got deferred too long.

All of that track had been redone and tested prior to the new service running today.

I heard they were behind and running late and I think they said they were going 81mph, which may/may not have been part of the problem or contributed to the accident.
