Annual “Christmas Movie” thread

It's a Wonderful Life is a story that is applicable every day - our lives touch other lives in myriad ways. Not inherently a Christmas concept, this movie just happens to be set at Christmas....just like Die Hard and Lethal Weapon.

Christmas Story
Elf
Christmas Vacation

I will watch Christmas Story and Elf multiple times this holiday season. I remember going to see Messy Marvin in "A Christmas Story" in the theater when it first came out.

My son likes Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer. Somehow it has found its way into the rotation.

Which, like Die Hard and Trading Places, make them Christmas movies.

At least, according to some.
I don't know why you resist the inclusion of Die Hard and Trading Places as Christmas movies.

Trading Places: The whole takes place during Christmas and New Years. Part of the movie takes place at a Christmas party with one of the main characters dressed as Santa. Another central part of the movie takes place on a New Years Eve train.

Die Hard: The main character comes all the way across the country to see his family for Christmas. The movie takes place during a Christmas party at Nakatomi Plaza. Look at this bad guy:

Under your restrictive definition of "Christmas Movie", I don't think It's a Wonderful Life qualifies. After all, it's just set on Christmas Eve, but it's not about Christmas. Are you going to tell people that It's a Wonderful Life isn't a Christmas movie?

Our Blu-Ray Trifecta is:

Elf (to kick off the season)
Vacation
Christmas Story

Our alternates throughout the years are:
Family Man
The Santa Clause Triliogy
Grinch (Jim Carey)
Christmas with the Kranks
Deck The Halls
Home Alone

For me it's Elf and Christmas Vacation. My wife always wants me to add in "The Santa Clause"

If I see them on I'll also watch Home Alone, Die Hard, and Gremlins.

I apologize for the "too" misspelling. Still, the sentiment is correct.

A movie has to be exclusively/primarily about Christmas for it to be considered a Christmas movie?

So, you're saying that It's a Wonderful Life isn't a Christmas movie. Same with Home Alone? Both of those are considered Christmas movies, but neither are really about Christmas.

For consistency, would you apply the same standard to say that The Martian is not a space movie? It takes place in space, but it's not really about space - it's basically Tom Hanks' Cast Away, but with different scenery.

This is approx the 7th time seeing the "Christmas movie or not" debate on this board. How many years has then been going on?

The debate will continue for as long as it take the doubters to place the gifts that are Die Hard and Trading Places under the warm hues of the tree of Christmas movie inclusivity.

Better Off Dead.

That's the last one I'll make an effort to watch yearly if I can. I'll watch Die Hard this year because my boy is old enough. We watched Christmas Story a few years in a row when the kids were a certain age. Gremlins several years ago when he was old enough for that.

I'm just not someone that watches movies over and over. Most of these movies in my mind range from ok to pretty bad anyway, not many I would watch more than once or maybe twice. Probably Better Off Dead, Die Hard, Nightmare Before Christmas, and Christmas Story are the only ones with re-watchability to me, and I've done enough Christmas Story for this lifetime. I'm not going to watch some of these just because it's Christmas. Bah humbug.
